The Cabildo of La Gomera has presented a mobile application of augmented reality to explore the Columbian Route in San Sebastián. The tool, funded by European funds, offers historical recreations and audiovisual content in Spanish and English.
The Cabildo of La Gomera has launched the mobile application 'Ruta Colombina La Gomera', an augmented reality tool designed to highlight the historical heritage linked to Christopher Columbus's passage through the island. The app, available for Android and iOS, allows residents and tourists to explore the historic centre of San Sebastián de La Gomera through immersive digital content.
An interactive experience in the historic centre
The application uses geolocation and augmented reality so that users, by pointing their mobile camera at iconic buildings such as the Customs House or the Count's Tower, can see historical recreations and access contextual information. The aim is to provide an autonomous and intuitive visit that connects the visitor with the island's past in a visual and simple way.
The president of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, highlighted that this initiative “represents a step forward in the island's strategy to preserve, disseminate, and project the historical heritage of La Gomera.” According to Curbelo, the app allows “to bring our history closer to citizens and those who visit us from an accessible, rigorous perspective adapted to modern times.”
For his part, the first vice president and insular councillor for Internal Regime and Insular Heritage, Adasat Reyes, explained that the app “has been conceived as a technical resource to support heritage interpretation.” Reyes added that “the goal is for users to physically explore the spaces linked to the Columbian Route while simultaneously accessing complementary content that helps contextualise its historical importance.”
European funding and bilingual content
The application is part of the demonstrative project for the creation of the tourist product 'Columbian Route', funded by European funds from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan – Next Generation EU. The tool includes content in Spanish and English, making it easier for both the local population and national and international visitors to use.
For the residents of San Sebastián de La Gomera, this app represents an opportunity to rediscover their own heritage in an innovative way. Tourists, for their part, will enjoy a richer and more educational experience during their visit to the capital of La Gomera, a key point in the Atlantic routes to America.
The initiative aims to consolidate the Columbian Route as a cultural and tourist resource of reference on the island. The app is already available for free download in the official app stores.
