The TOP TTR San Sebastián de La Gomera brought together over 50 players from the sub'13, sub'19, and senior categories last weekend, establishing itself as the first tournament that counts towards the national ranking held on the island.

The Audillón Pavilion in San Sebastián de La Gomera buzzed last weekend with the first national badminton tournament hosted by the Columbian island. More than 50 players from all the Canary Islands gathered at the TOP TTR San Sebastián de La Gomera, a level N7 event that scores for the national ranking and promises to be repeated each season.

Auria Badminton Club Dominates Lower Categories

In the sub'13 category, players from the Auria Badminton Club took home the individual titles. Álvaro Guadalupe triumphed in the men's final against Aitami Fernández (also from Auria) with a score of 21-19, 14-21, and 21-8. The bronze went to Manuel Cabrera (Lanzarote Raqueta Club) and Francisco José González (CD Pajaritos).

In the women's sub'13, Vera García (Auria Badminton Club) defeated Gretta Hernández (CD Ohada) by 21-10 and 22-20. Completing the podium were Ciara García (Tenzul El Rosario) and Julieta López (CD Pajaritos).

Both young talents also clinched the mixed doubles sub'13, demonstrating the strong talent pool of the Tenerife club.

Sub'19 and Senior: Title Distribution

In the sub'19 category, representatives from Tenzul El Rosario were the big winners. Dario Perera won the men's final against his club mate Diego Pérez (21-19, 21-16), while Sulimar Cabrera triumphed in the women's final against Leyna Santana (Bádminton La Palma) with a decisive 21-7 and 21-6.

In the senior category, José Miguel Sánchez (CD Ohada) took gold by defeating Juan Manuel Cortés (Tenzul El Rosario) 21-8 and 21-12. In the women's category, Antje Wietek (CD Valle Gran Rey) was declared the winner after a league in which she surpassed Carmen Delia Alonso and Jennifer Armas.

The doubles also had their moment in the spotlight. Manuel Cabrera and Aitami Fernández won the men's doubles sub'13, while Ciara García and Julieta López did the same in the women's. In sub'19, Gerard Hernández and Diego Pérez (Tenzul El Rosario) took the men's doubles, and Dario Perera and Sulimar Cabrera won the mixed. In senior, Juan Manuel Cortés and Lot Socas completed the honour roll.

Organisation and Institutional Support

The tournament was jointly organised by the La Palma Drop Sports Club and the Valle Gran Rey Sports Club, with coordination from the Canary Badminton Federation. It received support from the Cabildo of La Gomera, the San Sebastián de La Gomera City Council, and the General Directorate of Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands.

For badminton fans on the island, this event marks a milestone: for the first time, they could enjoy a national ranking competition without leaving La Gomera. The organisers hope that this event will become a fixture in the Canary calendar and attract more participants in future editions.
