José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero will not travel this summer to his home in Famara, Lanzarote, breaking a tradition of more than a decade. The former president remains in Madrid awaiting his judicial process.

The former president of the Government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has decided not to spend this summer in Lanzarote, where he used to enjoy long stays at his home in Playa de Famara. This is the first time in over ten years that he has missed this summer appointment, as ABC has reported.

Zapatero remains in Madrid while he continues to await the evolution of his judicial situation. The former leader is involved in a judicial procedure related to an investigation into an alleged organization dedicated to making intermediations with various governments in operations under suspicion.

A decade of summers in Famara

The former president acquired his home in Famara in 2017, although his connection to Lanzarote is much earlier. For years, both he and his family have enjoyed long summer stays on the island, first linked to the official residence of La Mareta and later in their own house by the coast of Famara.

Since then, his holidays in Lanzarote had become a practically fixed appointment every summer. This 2026 will therefore mark a break in a custom established for more than ten years.

Sánchez will summer on the island

Meanwhile, the current president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, does plan to enjoy a few days of rest in Lanzarote. He will stay at the La Mareta residence in Costa Teguise, thus maintaining the tradition of government presidents spending part of their holidays on the island.

For the residents of Famara, Zapatero's absence will not go unnoticed. Every summer, his presence usually generated some media commotion and the corresponding police escort. This year, the beach and surroundings will be quieter, although the shadow of the judicial investigation into the former president looms over the decision.
