The Cabildo of La Palma has managed to involve around twenty homes in the Familias Amigas programme, allowing protected minors to spend weekends and holidays in family environments.
The Cabildo of La Palma has consolidated the Familias Amigas programme, an initiative that since September 2024 allows protected minors to spend weekends and holiday periods in homes on the island. Currently, around twenty families are collaborating to provide a warmer and closer environment for these children and adolescents.
A programme that grows with citizen involvement
The island's councillor for Social Action, Ángeles Fernández, thanked the families for their response: “They have opened their homes so that the minors can be part of their daily lives and enjoy family activities.” The initiative aims to foster positive emotional bonds and facilitate the integration of minors into the community.
Fernández highlighted “the exemplary willingness, welcome, and commitment of the collaborating families,” who have become “role models of solidarity and generosity towards a particularly vulnerable group.”
A sports event as an example of integration
Recently, the programme organised a day of coexistence at the Ciudad Deportiva de Miraflores, with the support of the Sports Service. A total of 51 people participated, including minors, families, and Cabildo staff. The activity consisted of a team orientation treasure hunt and a swim in the pool.
These gatherings strengthen the bonds between families and minors, allowing children to experience shared leisure in a relaxed environment.
The Familias Amigas project is managed by the Social Action Area, through the Technical Unit for Minors and the Comprehensive Care for Women Victims of Gender Violence. The initiative seeks to offer alternative and healthy relationship models to minors who, due to various circumstances, have been separated from their family units.
For the residents of La Palma, this programme represents an opportunity to get directly involved in the well-being of the most vulnerable children. Anyone interested can join throughout the year by calling 626191303 or through the Cabildo's electronic headquarters.
The councillor encouraged more homes to participate: “Every family that joins makes a difference in a minor's life.” The programme demonstrates that citizen solidarity can change realities, a small gesture that means a world of possibilities for these children.
