The La Laguna City Council begins work on the renovation of Herradores Street this Tuesday, extending the provisional asphalt tracks from the parking lot of the Town Hall to the intersection with Avenida de la Trinidad and Tabares de Cala Street.
The Department of Works, Infrastructure and Accessibility of the La Laguna City Council starts this Tuesday, August 4, the renovation work on Herradores Street. The action consists of extending the existing provisional asphalt tracks in the first section of the road, from the San Cristóbal square (known as La Milagrosa), to the intersection with Avenida de la Trinidad and Tabares de Cala Street.
The aim is to replace the cobblestone strips that show significant deterioration and sinking with new bituminous mixture tracks. The removed material will be selected, classified, and transported to municipal warehouses for possible reuse, according to the council.
The Councillor for Works, Infrastructure and Accessibility, Ángel Chinea, explained that the same criteria adopted previously in the first section of Herradores and in the area around Plaza del Cristo are being followed. Chinea highlighted that this solution has proven to be "very appropriate" to ensure vehicle transit, pedestrian safety, and road maintenance.
Herradores Street is one of the main commercial arteries in the centre of La Laguna, with a high volume of traffic. Therefore, the councillor noted that the work has been scheduled for August to cause the least inconvenience possible to residents and merchants.
In addition to the installation of the new tracks, the intervention will take the opportunity to reinforce the central stone strip, repair adjacent slabs, and adjust the level of the manhole covers and affected services. These improvements aim to correct damage and reinforce the safety, accessibility, and functionality of the pavement, as detailed in the municipal project.
The work adds to the recent resurfacing of Avenida de la Trinidad, carried out last July, and the repaving of Barcelona Street. With this, the City Council aims to complete the improvement of the road environment in one of the main entry points to the city centre.
The intervention responds to a historical problem. In August 2021, the council urgently executed the last section of Herradores Street due to the sinking of the cobblestones under the weight of vehicles, which even forced the closure of the road. At that time, it was decided, with the approval of the plenary, to install asphalt tracks as a safer solution. Now this solution is being extended to the intersection with Avenida de la Trinidad, preventing further deterioration of the pavement.
During the works, a two-way traffic system will be established on Herradores and Heraclio Sánchez, exclusively for the access of authorized vehicles and garages. The City Council requests the cooperation of residents and reminds them to pay special attention to vertical signage and the indications of the workers.
Any possible alterations in access to the garages in the area, both during the day and at night, will be communicated by the contracting company as the work progresses. It is expected that the work will take place over the coming weeks, although the council has not specified an exact completion date.
This action is part of a broader plan to improve the road network in the historic centre of La Laguna, which also includes the recent repaving of Barcelona Street. With these interventions, the City Council seeks to ensure road safety and the comfort of pedestrians and drivers in one of the busiest areas of the municipality.
