The Tenerife municipality reached 849 tonnes of glass collected between January and June, a 3.8% increase compared to the same period last year. The Councillor for Municipal Services, Fran Hernández, attributes the increase to citizen commitment to recycling.
The City Council of La Laguna announced this Saturday the selective glass collection data for the first half of 2026, confirming an upward trend. Between January and June, 849 tonnes were collected, compared to 817.91 tonnes in the same period of 2025, representing an increase of 3.8%.
The Councillor for Municipal Services, Fran Hernández, positively assessed these results and stated that "recycling is one of the best examples of how small everyday gestures have a direct impact on the sustainability of our municipality." He added that the figures reflect "the commitment of thousands of residents who, through their daily collaboration, contribute to building a cleaner and more environmentally friendly La Laguna."
The months of January and March recorded the best figures of the semester, with 180.50 and 177.43 tonnes respectively, both above the figures from the previous year. May also saw significant growth, rising from 118.74 tonnes in 2025 to 140.44 tonnes in 2026, an increase that significantly contributed to the positive balance of the period.
Hernández explained that "these figures encourage us to continue strengthening awareness campaigns and to keep improving selective collection services in all towns and neighbourhoods of the municipality." The councillor insisted that "citizen involvement is essential to continue progressing towards an increasingly sustainable city model."
The La Laguna council plans to maintain recycling promotion actions and proper waste management in the coming months, aiming to consolidate the positive trend and increase material recovery for subsequent reuse. Improvements to containers and collection frequency are some of the measures that will continue to be implemented.
The Municipal Services area reminds that glass deposited in green containers is recycled 100% and can be reused infinitely without losing quality. In La Laguna, the network of glass containers is distributed throughout all population centres, with special attention to areas with higher tourist and hospitality traffic, where a greater amount of this waste is generated.
The comparison with the previous year shows a generally positive evolution, although with some monthly fluctuations. While January and March surpassed the figures of 2025, other months like February and April remained at similar levels. The behaviour of May, with an increase of over 21 tonnes, was key to offsetting the occasional declines.
The City Council of La Laguna encourages citizens to continue separating glass at source and to use the green containers, which are emptied periodically to ensure their availability. It also reminds that glass should be deposited without caps, corks, or organic remains to facilitate subsequent treatment.
The upward trend in glass collection in La Laguna is framed within a regional and island context of improving recycling rates, although still far from European targets. The municipality will continue to work on awareness campaigns and improving collection infrastructure to get closer to those goals.
In the coming months, the council plans to renew part of the glass containers and study the installation of new collection points in newly developed areas. Informational actions in schools and municipal markets will also be strengthened to involve all sectors of the population.
