The Cabildo of La Gomera has paid 248,543.81 euros in subsidies to the taxi sector, benefiting 54 licences across the island. The aid covers insurance, fuel, maintenance, and Social Security contributions.

The Cabildo of La Gomera has completed the payment of the subsidies to the taxi sector corresponding to the current call, with a total investment of 248,543.81 euros reaching 54 licences across the island. The island institution aims to alleviate the structural costs of an essential public service for mobility in the territory.

Subsidies to cover key sector expenses

The subsidies, managed by the Mobility department, are intended to cover expenses linked to the development of professional activity: insurance policies, fuel, maintenance and repairs, Social Security contributions, as well as tax and labour advisory services. Each beneficiary has received the amount based on the justification presented.

The president of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, emphasised that the payment of these subsidies "demonstrates the commitment of the island institution to a sector that is essential for ensuring mobility in La Gomera, especially in those areas where regular public transport has greater limitations."

Curbelo stressed that the taxi "plays a vital social and territorial role," facilitating the movements of residents and visitors and contributing to the integration of the island. "With this line of support, we help to offset part of the costs incurred by professionals and reinforce the continuity of a modern, stable, and accessible service," he stated.

Direct impact on daily mobility

The councillor for Mobility, Cristina Ventura, highlighted that the completion of the procedure and the payment of the subsidies "respond to the work done to support the taxi sector and address its real needs." She explained that the call has allowed support for 54 licences, "directly contributing to alleviating the structural costs of an essential activity for daily mobility on the island."

Ventura emphasised that the Cabildo maintains a permanent dialogue with taxi professionals to improve the efficiency of the calls and adapt the aid to the evolution of the sector. "The taxi is a key piece of the public mobility system and also an element that promotes territorial cohesion, local economy, and the provision of services in all municipalities," she added.

The president recalled that these measures are part of the island strategy to move towards a more efficient and sustainable mobility model, adapted to the territorial reality of La Gomera. For the island's taxi drivers, this financial injection represents a relief in a context of rising costs, especially in fuel and vehicle maintenance.

La Gomera, with its rugged topography and dispersed population centres, relies heavily on taxis as a complement to regular public transport. In municipalities such as Valle Gran Rey, Hermigua, or Agulo, where bus lines have limited frequencies, the taxi service becomes the main means of getting to work, the health centre, or the capital.

Sector professionals positively value the continuity of these subsidies, although they remind that margins remain tight. "Every year expenses rise, and any support is welcome," said members of the island's taxi association. This year's call has maintained the conditions of previous years, with a total amount slightly higher than that of 2025.

The Cabildo plans to open a new call in the coming months, once the suggestions from professionals have been evaluated to streamline procedures and expand the subsidisable amounts. In the meantime, the 54 licence holders can already access the deposited funds.
