The Governing Board of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has approved the renovation project for the square adjacent to El Corte Inglés, with a budget of one million euros to be covered by the company.
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has given the green light to the renovation project for the square located next to El Corte Inglés, in the Tres de Mayo area. The action, approved last Monday, June 29, by the local Governing Board, aims to definitively solve the damp problems affecting the underground parking for years.
The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, explained that the main objective is to resolve the leaks that have caused dripping and dampness in the parking. “The project will allow for a comprehensive renewal of the square, with the replacement of the pavement, the improvement of its image, and the modernisation of this public space,” he stated.
Public-private collaboration to finance the work
The intervention has a budget of one million euros, but the City Council will not contribute a single euro. It will be El Corte Inglés that executes and finances the work, as part of a public-private collaboration. This was detailed by the first deputy mayor and councillor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife.
“It is an excellent example of public-private collaboration. The final result will not only beautify a square in the Tres de Mayo area but will also leave it in perfect condition. All this, of course, under the strict technical coordination of municipal services,” Tarife affirmed.
The company operates the underground parking, which has 572 spaces spread over four floors, through a temporary land concession. In return, it pays an annual fee to the City Council. The work does not involve any transfer of ownership.
What will change in the square for residents
The renovation includes the replacement of the waterproofing system, the change of drainage channels, and the evacuation pipes. The original finishes will be maintained to preserve the aesthetic of the space. The result will be a more accessible, safe, and functional square for citizens.
Residents of the Tres de Mayo area and users of the shopping centre will notice the improvement, as the dampness in the parking has been a recurring complaint. The works, which do not yet have a start date, will be coordinated with municipal services to minimise disruptions.
This action adds to other interventions in public spaces in Santa Cruz, such as the recent pedestrianisation of Castillo Street. The El Corte Inglés square is a regular thoroughfare for thousands of people every day, making its renovation a long-awaited demand.
