A fire that broke out in the early hours in a house on Zarapicos Street, in Nazaret (Teguise), mobilised the firefighters and forced the evacuation of a family. The owner had to be taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.
This Friday morning turned into a distressing situation for a family in Nazaret, in the municipality of Teguise, when a fire broke out in the electrical panel of their garage. The fire, which started around 2:33 a.m., mobilised the personnel of the Lanzarote and La Graciosa Security and Emergency Consortium, alerted by the Emergency and Security Coordinating Centre (CECOES) 112.
The owner managed to control the flames before the firefighters arrived
According to the information provided by the Consortium, the fire originated in the electrical panel located in the garage of the property. Before the emergency services arrived on the scene, the homeowner managed to control the flames by himself, preventing the fire from spreading to other parts of the house. However, both the garage and the rest of the house were affected by a significant accumulation of smoke.
Upon arrival, the firefighters found that all family members had evacuated the house on their own, which facilitated the extinguishing and ventilation efforts. The personnel immediately began forced ventilation tasks to eliminate the accumulated smoke and improve safety inside the building. Additionally, they cut off the electrical supply from the outside, as the electrical panel and part of the installation had been damaged as a result of the fire.
One person taken to hospital for smoke inhalation
During the intervention, several family members showed symptoms of smoke inhalation, prompting the request for an ambulance from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC). Ultimately, the homeowner was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation, while the rest of those affected did not require evacuation, according to information provided by the emergency services.
The operation also involved agents from the Teguise Local Police, who assisted in managing the incident and perimeter security tasks. The swift action of the neighbours and emergency services prevented the fire from spreading to other houses on Zarapicos Street, a residential area of Nazaret.
Recommendation not to stay overnight in the house
Once the extinguishing, ventilation, and securing of the property were completed, the firefighters advised the family to thoroughly ventilate the house and not to spend the night there, due to the presence of smoke and the damage suffered by the electrical installation. The family, who has been temporarily relocated by relatives, will have to wait for an electrician to review and repair the electrical panel before they can return home.
This incident highlights the importance of regularly checking the electrical installations of homes, especially in areas like Nazaret, where many houses have garages with old electrical panels. The Consortium of Security reminds that, in the event of any signs of fire, the priority is to evacuate the house and call 112.
