A fire that broke out in a home on Fernando Sagaseta Street in Telde left five people affected on Thursday. A 13-year-old minor was moderately injured after falling from the building and was taken to Materno Infantil.
The flames completely destroyed a home on Fernando Sagaseta Street in the Jinámar neighbourhood (Telde), forcing the rescue of seven people and several animals. The fire, which broke out shortly after 12:30 PM, mobilised firefighters, paramedics, and police, who managed to control the situation in just over an hour.
A minor injured after jumping from the building
The 13-year-old minor suffered moderate injuries after jumping from the property to escape the fire. He was attended to by the Canarian Emergency Service (SUC) and transported by ambulance to the Materno Infantil University Hospital of Gran Canaria. His condition, according to SUC sources, is not extremely serious, but he remains under observation.
Two other people were hospitalised: a 71-year-old woman with moderate smoke inhalation poisoning, transferred to the Insular University Hospital of Gran Canaria, and another woman of the same age with an anxiety crisis, who was taken to the Jinámar Health Centre. In total, the SUC assisted five affected individuals, three of whom required transport.
Firefighters rescue seven people and extinguish the flames
Members of the Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium rescued seven people —including the minor— and several animals from inside the building. The firefighters managed to extinguish the flames that completely affected the home and ventilated the area to prevent new outbreaks. The swift intervention prevented the fire from spreading to other homes in the building.
Local Police and National Police secured the area and carried out the necessary procedures, while Civil Protection assisted in the operation. The Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) 1-1-2 of the Government of the Canary Islands received the alert at 12:30 PM and immediately activated all resources.
Local angle: caution in Jinámar
For the residents of Jinámar and the rest of Telde, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of regular checks of electrical and gas installations in homes. Although the causes of the fire have yet to be determined, sources from the Emergency Consortium recommend exercising extreme caution, especially in older homes. The Telde City Council has announced that it will assist those affected by providing temporary accommodation if needed.
Emergency services remind that, in the event of a fire, the safest option is not to jump from heights and to wait for firefighters to arrive. In this case, the minor chose to jump into the void, a decision that could have had more serious consequences.
The investigation into the origin of the fire is in the hands of the National Police and firefighters, who have already begun inquiries. Residents in the area can request updated information through 1-1-2 Canarias.
