The Telde City Council will place a large-format LED screen in San Gregorio Square for the World Cup 2026 semi-final between Spain and France, this Tuesday at 20:00.
The San Gregorio Square in Telde is getting ready to buzz with football. The City Council will install a giant screen this Tuesday so that locals and visitors can watch the World Cup 2026 semi-final between Spain and France live, starting at 20:00.
The initiative comes from the Department of Celebrations and Fairs, led by Miguel Rodríguez. The decision to move the event to the historic centre is due to the success of the previous broadcast of the quarter-finals against Belgium, which gathered hundreds of people at Franchy Roca Park last Friday.
A Plan to Liven Up the Commercial Area
The City Council aims to bring this sporting event closer to the heart of the open commercial area of the city. The chosen location, San Gregorio Square, intends to encourage citizen participation in a more central environment and boost the local economy.
Several establishments in the area have joined the proposal. Among them are Antequera, Viva Café, El Que Faltaba, La Joyería, Pastelerías Ojeda, Las Hermanas del Semáforo, and La Cervecita. All will collaborate to turn the day into a meeting point for fans.
The screen will be of large-format LED technology and will have an appropriate sound system for the space. Additionally, a specific area for the public will be set up, where attendees can enjoy the gastronomic offerings of nearby businesses before, during, and after the match.
Promoting Coexistence and Local Commerce
The council emphasises that the initiative aims to promote coexistence and collective enjoyment of one of the most important sporting events of the year. At the same time, they seek to boost commercial activity in the urban area of San Gregorio, a zone that usually sees less movement in the hours leading up to closing time.
The City Council has encouraged citizens to come wearing shirts, scarves, and colours of the Spanish national team to support the national squad in their attempt to reach the World Cup final. The event is this Tuesday at 20:00, and entry is free.
If the weather is favourable – which in July in Telde usually means warmth well into the night – the square promises to become an improvised cheering stand. Those who cannot make it will always have the option to watch the match at home, but it certainly won't be the same as sharing the excitement with hundreds of neighbours under the stars.
