The Vallehermoso Town Hall participated in a community day for seniors held at the Municipal Field of Hermigua, with the attendance of around twenty locals.
A group of about twenty residents from Vallehermoso travelled to the Municipal Field of Hermigua to take part in a community day aimed at seniors. The event, organised with the collaboration of several municipalities in La Gomera, sought to promote interaction and integration among attendees.
The day was attended by the Councillor for Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families of the Government of the Canary Islands, Candelaria Delgado, as well as the Councillor for the Social Services Area of the Insular Council and representatives from the participating town halls. From Vallehermoso, the Councillor for Sports, Ricardo Coello, accompanied the group throughout the event.
A Day of Shared Activities
The seniors from Vallehermoso enjoyed a programme of recreational and socialisation activities alongside residents from other municipalities on the island. The atmosphere was relaxed and participatory, with adapted exercises and spaces for dialogue. This initiative is part of an insular strategy to combat unwanted loneliness and promote active ageing.
Councillor Ricardo Coello positively assessed the experience:
“These days are an opportunity for our seniors to break from their routine, meet people from other towns, and feel like active members of the community.”Councillor Candelaria Delgado emphasised the importance of these policies to ensure the well-being of the elderly population in the islands.
New Dynamisation Programme Underway
The Vallehermoso Town Hall has announced that the tender for the seniors' dynamisation programme is already underway, currently in the phase of providing resources and personnel. The aim is to offer a broad calendar of activities over the coming months, tailored to the needs and interests of the group.
The Mayor, Emiliano Coello, stressed that “the policy of supporting our seniors and youth is a fundamental priority in municipalities like Vallehermoso, as these types of initiatives directly contribute to improving their quality of life and fostering their active participation in society.”
For the residents of Vallehermoso, these activities provide relief in their daily lives. Many of them live in dispersed rural areas, where opportunities for socialisation are limited. The proximity to Hermigua allows for short and safe travels, facilitating attendance.
The day concluded with a shared lunch and the promise to repeat the experience in the near future. The Town Hall encourages interested seniors to inquire at the municipal social services about upcoming events.
