The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has begun renovation works on the freely accessible multi-sport court in Tafira Baja, which include new fencing, PVC flooring, and nets.

The Municipal Institute for the Promotion of Physical Activity and Sport (IMD) has launched the comprehensive rehabilitation of the multi-sport court in Tafira Baja, located in the Vegueta, Cono Sur, and Tafira district. The work, which started this week, aims to provide a quality sports space for local residents and encourage outdoor exercise.

New fencing and PVC flooring

The works include replacing the current wooden fencing with new, more resistant and durable fences, adapted for the intensive use of the facility. Additionally, the enclosure will be painted, and the goal nets will be repaired, as well as the installation of new nets in the baskets.

The playing surface will be paved with PVC tiles, a system that the IMD has already successfully implemented in the multi-sport court of Nueva Isleta and in the multi-sport court of Juan del Río Ayala square, in the Madera and Corcho neighbourhood. This material provides a uniform, non-slip finish that is easy to maintain.

Commitment to the neighbourhoods

The Councillor for Sports and Youth, Carla Campoamor, highlighted that this work "demonstrates the government's commitment to the residents of all the neighbourhoods in the municipality." In statements made during the start of the works, Campoamor emphasised that the initiative contributes to "bringing quality sports facilities closer to the public" and to "continuing to promote social transformation and healthy lifestyle habits among children and young people."

The multi-sport court in Tafira Baja is freely accessible, making it a meeting point for grassroots sports and active leisure in the area. With this renovation, the IMD hopes to increase the number of users and improve the experience for those who already use it daily.

Temporary closure during the works

To ensure the safety of users and facilitate the development of the works, the court will remain closed to the public for the duration of the renovations. The City Council has not specified an exact reopening date, but municipal sources estimate that the works could be completed within three to four weeks, weather permitting.

Residents of Tafira Baja and surrounding areas will need to seek temporary alternatives for sports practice. The IMD recommends using other nearby municipal facilities, such as the courts at the Tafira Sports Centre or the courts at La Mayordomía Park, while the rehabilitation is completed.

This initiative is part of the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria's plan to improve sports infrastructure, which has renovated several courts in different districts of the city in recent months. The total investment in this project amounts to approximately 80,000 euros, according to IMD sources.

With the renovation of the multi-sport court in Tafira Baja, the City Council continues its commitment to grassroots sports and the revitalisation of neighbourhoods, providing modern and safe spaces for everyone's enjoyment. Meanwhile, residents eagerly await the reopening to return to enjoying their familiar court, but as new.
