The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit in Lanzarote advises reducing the use of mobile devices during school holidays to encourage outdoor play and physical activity.

Professionals from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit of the Lanzarote Health Services Management have launched a series of recommendations for children and adolescents to use mobile devices healthily during the holidays. Summer, they explain, is an ideal opportunity to 'unplug' from screens and regain habits such as outdoor play, reading, or sports.

Risks of Screen Overuse in Minors

Excessive use of mobiles and tablets can affect sleep, promote sedentary behaviour, and hinder attention, according to specialists. It can also lead to less emotional control and irritable behaviour, especially if used before bedtime or for many consecutive hours.

In the case of children under six years old, the Unit recalls the recommendations of the Spanish Pediatric Association, which completely discourages screen use until the age of six. From that age, limited, supervised, and age-appropriate use is recommended.

Guidelines for Families: Clear Rules and Attractive Alternatives

The unit insists on establishing clear and consistent rules for all household members. For example, keeping the mobile out of the room during the night, avoiding screens during meals, and reserving moments of the day completely free from devices.

Clinical psychologist and head of the unit, Ana Madrigal, states that “during the holidays, it is important to maintain a certain daily structure for minors through social activities with friends, and engaging in cognitive tasks, such as reading, and autonomy tasks like tidying their room daily.” She warns: “If screens are allowed, it should be for a previously agreed time, with control and supervision of the content.”

Specialists encourage replacing screen time with activities such as playing sports, going to the beach, visiting parks or play centres, doing crafts, reading, or cooking as a family. All of this promotes healthy emotional development and helps minors truly disconnect.

The Example of Adults and Sleep Protection

Another key aspect is the example set by adults. Minors learn by observing their family role models, so it is recommended that parents also use their mobiles responsibly and share leisure time without screens.

Protecting sleep is equally a priority. Getting enough sleep improves emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, and psychological well-being. Experts advise establishing a stable nighttime routine, maintaining a regular schedule, and avoiding stimulating content before bedtime.

In short, the goal is not to eliminate technology, but to teach how to use it in a balanced way. Residents of Lanzarote can apply these tips at home so that the little ones can enjoy a more active and healthy summer.
