The PSOE of Lanzarote accuses Betancort of orchestrating a judicial hunt against Corujo

The PSOE of Lanzarote accuses Oswaldo Betancort of instigating a judicial hunt against María Dolores Corujo over the 'Sosa case', now in the Supreme Court.

The PSOE of Lanzarote has reported that the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, is promoting a political strategy against its general secretary, María Dolores Corujo, through a judicial procedure that has already reached the Supreme Court.

The Secretary of Organisation of the PSOE of Lanzarote, José Juan Cruz Saavedra, asserted this Tuesday that the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, is driving a "judicial hunt" against the socialist deputy María Dolores Corujo. According to the leader, the strategy is framed within the so-called 'Sosa case', which investigates the payment of the salary as a released health councillor to the doctor Juan Manuel Sosa during the previous term, when Corujo presided over the island institution.

Cruz pointed out that the origin of the procedure lies in a complaint filed by the island director of the Presidency of the Cabildo, David Montes, a position that, according to the PSOE, was created by Betancort with the aim of harming the socialist leader. "The hiring of this island director incurs a cost of 75,000 euros annually for public funds," Cruz denounced, who believes that this is more of a political maneuver than a legitimate administrative action.

The case reaches the Supreme Court due to Corujo's status as a privileged official

As Corujo is a deputy in Congress for the province of Las Palmas, she enjoys the status of privileged official, which has led to the case being elevated to the Supreme Court. This fact, according to the PSOE, demonstrates the seriousness of the situation and the need for an investigation with all guarantees. "It is no coincidence that this moment has been chosen to reactivate the case," Cruz stated, who believes that the intention is to politically wear down Corujo ahead of future electoral processes.

The socialist leader recalled that the Island Government Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has already authorised Betancort to take legal action in this matter. The vote, as he detailed, passed with the abstention of the Popular Party and councillor Armando Santana, which, in the PSOE's view, evidences that even the government partners of Coalición Canaria do not fully support this initiative.

Coalición Canaria in the spotlight

The PSOE directly points to Coalición Canaria as the party behind this strategy. "Betancort acts as the executing arm of a political decision that seeks to implicate the general secretary of the PSOE in Lanzarote judicially," Cruz asserted. The socialist party believes that the Sosa case is a "minor issue" that has been artificially inflated to damage Corujo's image, who remains one of the most prominent figures of the party on the island.

For the citizens of Lanzarote, this controversy represents a new episode of political tension in an institution that has already experienced several confrontations between the two main parties. While the PSOE speaks of a "hunt", CC denies any political motivation and defends the legality of its actions. Time will tell if the Supreme Court gives credibility to the complaint or archives the case.
