The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has approved the compulsory expropriation of three plots in the neighbourhoods of San Nicolás and San Roque, with the aim of building parking, open spaces and improving pedestrian mobility. The total investment exceeds 160,000 euros.
The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has taken a new step to reverse the historical deficit of infrastructure in the Riscos of the capital. The Local Government Board has approved the initiation of the compulsory expropriation process for three plots in the neighbourhoods of San Roque and San Nicolás, two of the most emblematic areas with the greatest deficiencies in the city. The total investment amounts to 161,822 euros, according to municipal sources.
San Roque: a large parking area with a viewpoint over the Guiniguada
Two of the plots are located in the neighbourhood of San Roque. The first, at number 41 on Farnesio Street, has an area of 307 square metres and has been valued at 102,354 euros. This plot is part of a larger area, over 1,200 square metres, which the special plan for the neighbourhood intends to convert into a large parking facility. The idea, according to the City Council, is to build a parking structure that takes advantage of the slope of the hillside, with a stepped roof that serves as a viewpoint overlooking the Guiniguada ravine.
The project includes the acquisition of two protected homes from the early 20th century, at numbers 35 and 37 on the same street, which once housed the old San Roque Sports Club. The City Council plans to allocate them for community-use purposes, thus integrating the built heritage into the new infrastructure.
The second plot in San Roque is at number 1 on Caramillo Street, with 106.5 square metres and a value of 32,270 euros. This is an undeveloped space at the start of the street. The special plan includes the creation of an open space with stairs and ramps that connect this street with Nueva Street through the Pasacote alley, where there is already a small square. Currently, access is limited to a narrow staircase that only serves the adjacent homes.
San Nicolás: towards a parking area on Domingo Guerra del Río
The third expropriation affects a plot at number 3 on Rosal Street, in the Risco de San Nicolás. The plot, measuring 126 square metres, is occupied by a ruined 19th-century house and has been valued at 27,198 euros. The special plan for the neighbourhood, approved in early 2023, aims to merge this land with adjacent plots to create a parking area for local residents.
The City Council already acquired the adjacent plot, at number 81 on Domingo Guerra del Río Street, the main road of the neighbourhood, for 73,316 euros last December. The purchase of the larger plot, measuring 350 square metres and also undeveloped, is still pending to complete the future parking area. Municipal sources indicate that efforts are ongoing to finalise the acquisition of this last piece of land.
With these actions, the City Council seeks to alleviate the lack of parking spaces and improve pedestrian accessibility in neighbourhoods where narrow streets and steep slopes hinder mobility. The special plans for San Roque and San Nicolás were definitively approved in 2023, and since then the City Council has expedited the purchase of plots to make the planned facilities a reality.
For residents, the creation of these parking areas and open spaces represents a tangible improvement in their daily lives, as it will reduce the search for parking in highly congested areas and facilitate walking, especially for people with reduced mobility. However, the works do not yet have a start date, as all expropriations must first be completed and the executive projects drafted.
