The second edition of the Javi Beirán Academy has kicked off in Fuerteventura with the participation of figures such as Lolo Calín, assistant coach of Real Madrid, and former internationals Javier Beirán and Víctor Claver. The camp, which runs until July 8, brings together young people aged 13 to 18 at Playitas Resort and other venues on the island.
High-level basketball is once again at the centre in Fuerteventura. The second edition of the Javi Beirán Academy has begun with a luxury lineup: Isidoro "Lolo" Calín, assistant coach of Real Madrid and winner of three Euroleagues, leads the technical side, accompanied by Javier Beirán, world champion with the Spanish national team, and Víctor Claver, who has played in the NBA and ACB. The camp, which takes place from July 3 to 8, is supported by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the Town Hall of Tuineje.
A camp with a champion's seal
The initiative, which celebrated its first edition last year, has grown in ambition. As explained by the president of the Cabildo, Lola García, during an institutional meeting at Playitas Resort, "it is a pride that Fuerteventura hosts a sports initiative of this level again, bringing together great basketball figures and offering our youth the opportunity to learn from professionals who represent the values of effort, perseverance, and teamwork".
The Sports Councillor, Luis González, highlighted that the academy "represents a great opportunity for basketball in Fuerteventura, as it brings specialized training closer to our youth and increasingly integrates the island's clubs and coaches". He also emphasized that "many boys and girls have the chance to share experiences with references in this sport without leaving Fuerteventura".
Top-level training in three venues
The training sessions are spread across the Gran Tarajal Municipal Pavilion, the IES Vigán Pavilion, and the facilities of Playitas Resort, where the participants are accommodated. The camp is aimed at young people aged 13 to 18, focusing on specialized technical training. The technical direction of Lolo Calín adds a quality boost: his accolades include three Euroleagues, five ACB Leagues, five King's Cups, and seven Supercups, ensuring top-level teaching.
Javier Beirán, who lends his name to the academy, expressed his satisfaction with the project's consolidation: "This second edition takes a further step in quality, with a great technical team and the incorporation of Víctor Claver". The former Valencia Basket and Spanish national team player, who was world champion in 2019, recalled that "the camp not only seeks to improve technical level but also to convey values such as effort and teamwork".
A boost for grassroots sports and tourism
Beyond training, the academy has a direct impact on the island. The young participants, many from other islands or the mainland, discover the attractions of Fuerteventura, which, according to the president of the Cabildo, "turns sport into a tool to project Fuerteventura as a reference destination". The Councillor for Security and Emergencies, Lolina Negrín, took the opportunity to remind everyone that during these days of high temperatures (with expected highs of up to 40 degrees), it is important for athletes to stay well hydrated and avoid the hottest hours of the day.
For basketball fans on the island, the presence of figures like Calín, Beirán, and Claver is a unique opportunity. The camp, held in the height of summer, allows young talents to train with some of the best coaches and former players in the national and international scene. Moreover, collaboration with local clubs promotes youth development and the integration of island basketball into the high-performance circuit.
The camp will conclude on July 8 with a closing day where participants will put into practice what they have learned. Those who could not attend can follow updates through the academy's and the Cabildo of Fuerteventura's social media.
