The Town Hall of Los Llanos de Aridane has awarded the title of favourite son to Dr. Ricardo Jesús González Cámpora, born in the municipality in 1951 and a key figure in oncological Pathology.
The Plenary Hall of the Town Hall of Los Llanos de Aridane hosted the ceremony for the presentation of the title of favourite son to Dr. Ricardo Jesús González Cámpora, a recognition that the municipality grants to those who stand out for their professional and human trajectory. The awardee, a native of the locality, has developed a career spanning more than four decades in medicine, with a special focus on cancer diagnosis.
A career forged between La Laguna and Seville
González Cámpora began his studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of La Laguna, where he was one of its first students. He later specialised in Pathological Anatomy at the University of Seville, where he earned his doctorate with honours in 1976. He expanded his training at the University of Southampton in England and returned to Spain to consolidate a career in both patient care and teaching.
In 1974, he began his teaching career, and in 1997 he obtained the chair of the Department of Cytology and Normal and Pathological Histology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Seville. Throughout his career, he has directed and co-directed numerous doctoral theses, training several generations of healthcare professionals.
Research and reference hospital service
In the hospital setting, he started in 1976 in the Department of Pathological Anatomy at the University Hospital of Seville and was appointed head of the department in 1981, a position he held until his retirement in September 2016. After his official retirement, he continued to work as the medical director of the Dr. Galera Centre for Pathological Anatomy and Cytopathology.
His research work translates into participation in 42 funded projects, the publication of 275 articles in national and international medical journals, and collaboration in 42 scientific books. His main lines of study focus on endocrine pathology —especially thyroid gland diseases— and soft tissue and bone tumours.
The doctor has been part of editorial committees for scientific journals and has received various awards, such as the Research Award, which attest to his prestige in the field of diagnostic oncology.
A source of pride for Los Llanos de Aridane
The Town Hall emphasised that this title recognises not only González Cámpora's professional excellence but also his connection to the municipality that saw him born. For the residents of Los Llanos de Aridane, having a favourite son of such calibre is a source of pride and an example for new generations of students who dream of dedicating themselves to science or medicine.
The event was attended by family members, local authorities, and representatives from the healthcare sector, who wanted to accompany the honouree at such a special moment. The doctor, moved, thanked the gesture and recalled his roots in La Palma, assuring that he always carries Los Llanos in his heart.
