A woman died this Monday at Nido de las Águilas beach in Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura) after being rescued from the sea in cardiac arrest. Despite the emergency services' resuscitation efforts, the situation could not be reversed.

A woman lost her life on Monday afternoon at Nido de las Águilas beach in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario. The incident occurred minutes before 17:00 hours when the Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) 112 received a report of a person floating face down in the water.

A bather in the area managed to pull the woman from the sea before the emergency services arrived. However, the victim was already in cardiac arrest, according to 112 Canarias.

Emergency mobilization

Rescuers from the Puerto del Rosario Beach Lifeguard Service and local firefighters were dispatched to the scene. Both teams immediately began basic resuscitation efforts on the woman, which continued without response.

The Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) sent two basic life support ambulances, as well as a doctor and a nurse from the Puerto del Rosario Health Centre. The medical personnel continued with advanced resuscitation efforts, but could not reverse the cardiac arrest.

Ultimately, the medical staff could only confirm the woman's death, whose identity had not been disclosed at the time of the official statement.

Joint operation

The emergency operation involved the SUC, Primary Care, Puerto del Rosario Firefighters, the Beach Lifeguard Service, Local Police, and National Police. The officers collaborated with the other resources and carried out the necessary procedures to clarify the exact circumstances of the incident.

Nido de las Águilas beach is one of the most frequented on the coast of Puerto del Rosario, especially during the summer season. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of taking precautions while swimming, even in areas with lifeguard services. The Puerto del Rosario City Council has stated that the causes of the drowning are under investigation.

Bathers are advised to respect the warning flags, not to swim in unmonitored areas, and to pay attention to sea currents. In case of emergency, the most effective action is to call 112 and not attempt rescues without flotation devices, to avoid a double tragedy.
