The City Council of Puerto del Rosario has presented the Unamuno Route, a cultural itinerary that recalls the writer's stay in Fuerteventura in 1924 and aims to attract visitors to the small businesses of the capital of Fuerteventura.

A walk through history alongside Miguel de Unamuno, and at the same time, a boost for traditional shops. The City Council of Puerto del Rosario has launched the Unamuno Route, an itinerary that traverses the places linked to the philosopher's confinement in Fuerteventura in 1924, integrated into the Commercial Routes project, which combines cultural heritage and support for local commerce.

The initiative, funded by ERDF through the Smart Commercial Destination program, also includes a Sculptural Route featuring urban artworks in the capital. The goal is for both tourists and residents to stroll through the streets, scan QR codes, and ultimately shop at participating establishments.

A literary itinerary with a mobile technology touch

The mayor, David de Vera, explained that the routes “go far beyond simple urban signage” and represent a new way to rediscover the city. Each participating business will display an identifying sign with a QR code that, when scanned, provides information about the business and places it on the route map.

The councillor for Commerce, Tacoremi Gutiérrez, detailed that the digital system allows visitors to access information about the establishment and its offerings, thus promoting local consumption. The delivery of the badges has already begun from the Commerce department of the council.

Proximity commerce as an economic engine

The president of the Merchants' Association, Daniela Plotegher, valued the public-private collaboration and highlighted that such innovative projects are key to revitalising commercial activity in the face of large platforms. For the residents of Puerto del Rosario, the route provides a perfect excuse to rediscover historical corners and, in the process, support the small businesses of the municipality.

The Unamuno Route is already operational and can be explored with a mobile phone in hand. Those who take the plunge will find at each stop a piece of the writer's stay on the island and, at the end of the journey, the chance to take home more than just a memory.
