Aruban Sarah-Quita Offringa and Dutch Maaike Huvermann will face off in the women's final of the 38th World Windsurfing Championship in Fuerteventura, at Sotavento beach.
The second day of the world windsurfing championship in Fuerteventura defined the women's final. Sarah-Quita Offringa, from Aruba, and Maaike Huvermann, from the Netherlands, will compete this Saturday at Sotavento beach, in Puerto del Rosario.
Offringa dominates in quarter and semi-finals
Offringa began her participation with a devastating performance against German Helena Derya. The Aruban scored 33.4 points, the highest score in the women's quarter-finals, compared to her rival's 4.7, as reported by the championship organisation.
In the semi-finals, Offringa maintained control from the first minutes against German Sandra Schill. The current reference in women's Freestyle once again surpassed the 30-point barrier and finished the heat with 32.5 points, against Schill's 2.2, securing her place in the final.
Huvermann comes back in a tight semi-final
Maaike Huvermann also had a very solid morning. In the quarter-finals, she clearly defeated Dutch Isabel van Noesel by 28.9 points to 4.9. Her semi-final against German Lisa Kloster was much tighter, with a slight advantage during the first half thanks to manoeuvres like a ‘gozzada’, a regular ‘kono’ and a ‘culo’. The difference between them was less than a quarter of a point.
Huvermann kept her composure and responded with several manoeuvres in the final minutes. The Dutchwoman ended up winning by 29.1 points to 20.7 and secured her place in the final against Offringa, while Kloster and Schill will compete for third place.
The Canarian audience awaits the final
Sotavento beach in Fuerteventura is the ideal setting for a high-level final. Canarian windsurfing fans will enjoy a duel between two of the best in the world. Offringa, with her aggressive style and high scores, is the favourite, but Huvermann has shown her ability to react at key moments.
The organisation has confirmed that the women's final will take place after the men's semi-finals, which will see Lennart Neubauer (Greece) against Balz Müller (Switzerland) and Takumi Moriya (Japan) against Yentel Caers (Belgium). The day promises strong emotions on the majorera sand.
“I am very happy to be in the final. The competition has been tough, but I have managed to stay focused,” Offringa stated after her semi-final.
For local fans, watching these athletes in action is a privilege. Fuerteventura is consolidating its status as a world reference for windsurfing, attracting the best talents from the planet. The women's final is expected to be a display of technique and power.
The event is this Saturday afternoon at Sotavento beach. Admission is free, and it is recommended to arrive early to secure a good spot. The wind, which usually blows strongly in the area, will be the competitors' ally.
