The State Meteorological Agency forecasts very strong wind gusts on several islands and temperatures reaching 34 degrees in Gran Canaria this Sunday.
Sunday will start with clear skies and light dust in the atmosphere, but the wind will be the main feature. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued warnings for very strong gusts in the interior of Lanzarote, south of Jandía, and low areas in the southeast and northwest of the mountainous islands, with particular emphasis on Gran Canaria and La Gomera.
Gran Canaria, the hottest at 34 degrees
On the round island, temperatures could reach 34 degrees in areas of the interior south and west. The trade winds will blow moderately, but with strong intervals in the southeast and northwest, where occasional very strong gusts are expected, especially towards the end of the day. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures will range between 23 and 28 degrees.
In Tenerife, the thermometer will rise slightly in the south and west, and 30 degrees cannot be ruled out on the southern coasts of the metropolitan area and the south of the island. The trade winds will be moderate, with strong gusts in the southeast and extreme northwest. The skies will be mostly clear, with intervals in the coastal strips of the north during the early and late hours.
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: wind and dust
In Lanzarote, the day will be clear, with intervals in the west and light dust in the atmosphere. Temperatures will hardly change, although in the southeast, local temperatures could reach 30 degrees. The trade winds will blow with locally strong intervals in the interior of the southern half, where occasional very strong gusts are expected during the second half of the day. In Arrecife, temperatures will range between 23 and 29 degrees.
In Fuerteventura, the outlook is similar: clear with intervals in the west and light dust. In the southern half, temperatures will exceed 30 degrees. The wind will be trade winds with locally strong intervals south of Jandía, where occasional very strong gusts are also expected. In Puerto del Rosario, the minimums will be 22 degrees and the maximums will be 28.
The state of the sea will also be affected. North or northeast winds of force 4 or 5 are expected, increasing to 6 and 7, with choppy or rough seas. In the southwest and south of the islands, the wind will be variable from force 1 to 3, with slight waves or ripples. Additionally, there will be a northeast swell with waves of 1 to 2 meters and regular or poor visibility due to the dust.
Aemet recommends caution to drivers, especially in areas where very strong gusts are expected, and to bathers due to the state of the sea. The dust, although light in the atmosphere, could reduce visibility in some areas.
