Aemet issues warnings for temperatures up to 34 degrees, strong winds and light dust across the archipelago this Sunday. Gusts could be particularly intense in Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote.
Sunday will bring a meteorological cocktail to the Canary Islands. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated warnings for intense heat, strong trade winds with very strong gusts, and light dust at altitude. The highest temperatures are expected in the interior of the south and west of Gran Canaria, where thermometers could reach between 32 and 34 degrees.
In the rest of the archipelago, values will also be high. Aemet forecasts that temperatures will exceed 30 degrees in parts of Fuerteventura, Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. The heat will be particularly noticeable on the southern coasts and in inland areas, where conditions will be stifling during the central hours of the day.
Trade Winds with Warnings in Several Islands
The trade winds will blow strongly in different areas. In Gran Canaria, it will be strong in the lower southeast and northwest areas, with possible very strong gusts at the end of the day. Aemet recommends caution on the roads in these areas, especially for drivers of light vehicles and motorcycles.
In Tenerife, the trade winds will be moderate but with strong intervals in the southeast and extreme northwest. Very strong gusts are also not ruled out. In the southern metropolitan area and on the southern coast, temperatures could reach 30 degrees, combined with the wind, creating a variable thermal sensation.
Light Dust and Clear Skies
The dust will be light and at altitude, so it will not significantly affect air quality at the surface. However, people with respiratory issues should take precautions. The skies will be mostly clear or slightly cloudy in most islands, with some cloudy intervals on the northern coasts during the early and late hours of the day.
In Lanzarote, the day will be clear, with cloudy intervals in the west at the beginning and end of the day. Temperatures will hardly change, although in the southeast, 30 degrees could be reached at times. The northeast wind will have strong intervals in the interior of the southern half, with very strong gusts during the second half of the day.
In Fuerteventura, clear skies will dominate, with some cloudy intervals in the west at the start and end. Temperatures will remain stable, and in the southern half, they will exceed 30 degrees. The trade winds will be locally strong in southern Jandía, with possible very strong gusts.
Sea Conditions and Recommendations
At sea, north or northeast winds of force 4 to 5 are expected, increasing to force 6 and 7, with choppy or rough seas. In the southern and southwestern islands, the wind will be variable, with slight waves or ripples. There will also be a northeast swell with waves between one and two meters. The dust could reduce visibility at times.
For bathers and sailors, it is recommended to exercise extreme caution, especially on the southeastern and northwestern coasts of the islands. Wind gusts can be dangerous for small vessels and for those engaging in water sports. Aemet advises following the authorities' instructions and staying informed through their official channels.
In La Gomera, the skies will be slightly cloudy, with intervals in the lower northern areas and light dust at altitude. Maximum temperatures could hover around 30 degrees in the interior of the south and west. The wind will be moderate, but strong on the southeast and west slopes, with occasional very strong gusts at the end of the day.
In La Palma, clear skies will prevail, with some cloudy intervals in the lower northern and eastern areas. Temperatures will rise slightly in the interior, and 30 degrees could be reached on the western slope. The trade winds will be occasionally strong on the southeastern and northwestern coasts, with the possibility of very strong gusts.
In El Hierro, the day will be marked by clear skies, with some cloudy intervals in the north and light dust at high levels. Temperatures will change little, although 30 degrees could be reached in areas of the interior south. The wind will have strong intervals on the southeastern coasts and the extreme northwest, with possible very strong gusts, especially in the early and late hours of the day.
Aemet reminds that these types of phenomena, although common in the Canary Islands, require attention. It is recommended to avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours, stay well hydrated, and not leave elderly people or children alone in vehicles. For Monday, a slight decrease in temperatures is expected, although the wind will continue to blow strongly.
