The artistic director Enrique Camacho and councillor Javier Caraballero have agreed with the groups that murgas and rondallas will perform joint numbers at the queen's election gala on February 17, 2027.

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival is preparing for a historic edition. With registration deadlines for groups and proposals for the poster still to expire, the artistic director, Enrique Camacho, and the councillor for Festivals, Javier Caraballero, have reached an agreement with the collectives for the queen's election gala, scheduled for February 17, 2027, to be a showcase of local talent.

In a marathon of meetings held on Monday, representatives from murgas, musical groups, rondallas, choreographic groups, and comparsas approved a proposal that strengthens the participation of the groups in the central show. The 2027 edition will be dedicated to Imperial Rome and commemorates the 40th anniversary of the first themed carnival, which began precisely with Rome.

Recreation of 'Blessed my Guanche land'

One of the highlights will be the recreation of the number performed by the rondallas at the bullring in 1987, under the direction of maestro Jesús Fariña and at the request of the then director of the gala, José Tamayo. The song 'Blessed my Guanche land' had the audience on their feet that night and now, forty years later, it will resonate again at the gala.

The person responsible for the new staging will be Israel Espino, director of the rondalla that won the first prize for Interpretation in the last edition. The idea is to recover the essence of that performance, adapting it to current times while maintaining the spirit that moved an entire city. The residents of Santa Cruz will be able to relive an iconic moment of their carnival.

Murgas in unison and live

The murgas will also be in the spotlight. After three editions where the performance fell to the winner of Interpretation, and with the differences that arose in 2026 due to the song chosen by Trapaseros, Enrique Camacho has secured the support of the collective for a change of direction. The murgas will sing together again at the gala, but they will do so as a single formation and asserting their style, without disguising themselves as anything else.

The major advancement is that they will perform live, beyond having a musical base recorded that includes percussion. This was one of the main demands of the collective, which thus sees its work on stage recognised. For the audience, it will be a unique opportunity to see all the murgas in the city singing in unison, with the power of their voices unfiltered.

The consensus was possible, in large part, because Enrique Camacho bet on a gala that asserts the essence of the carnival and the strength of the groups. The 2027 edition promises to be a tribute to tradition and citizen participation, with the street as the stage and the Guinness World Record dance as the grand finale. Carnival enthusiasts already have a date marked on their calendars: February 17, at the queen's gala.
