The Taxi Board of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has detailed the progress on subsidies for adapted vehicles and security systems, with 10 applications for PMR licences and 127 requests for cameras. Additionally, the new app for requesting a taxi will begin testing in November.
The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has confirmed that subsidies for adapting vehicles for people with reduced mobility (PMR) will be paid in the coming months. Each licence will receive €3,000 and ten applications have already been counted.
Ten PMR licences and 127 security camera aids
The Councillor for Taxis, Gladis de León, explained that the aid line for adapted vehicles is the most advanced. “We expect the amount contemplated to be paid in the coming months,” she stated. In total, ten applications for PMR licences have been received.
On the other hand, the subsidies for installing security cameras in taxis total 127 requests. However, some require rectification, so payment will be made throughout the year.
“We continue to advance hand in hand with the taxi sector to modernise an essential public service,” highlighted Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez.
New taxi app: testing in November
One of the flagship projects is the new application to request the service. According to De León, the first real tests will be conducted in November. The app aims to digitalise the service and improve the user experience.
The City Council has also established new taxi stops on Venezuela Avenue and at Sargentos Provisionales. Additionally, the stop at the Taburiente hotel and the manoeuvre for users of the University Hospital La Candelaria have been modified.
The working group is studying adjusting the schedules of the stops so they can be shared with the usual parking of citizens.
Taxi permit exams postponed to September
The Taxi Board also addressed the aptitude tests for obtaining the municipal driving permit. Currently, there are 45 applications and the deadline remains open until the 20th. However, due to the applications received, a rectification period will be opened, so the exams will be postponed to the first half of September.
Mayor Bermúdez emphasised the council's commitment to a more competitive and sustainable taxi service. “Our goal is to respond to the current and future needs of Santa Cruz,” he stated.
The meeting also discussed the Strategic Plan for Improving the Competitiveness of the Taxi Sector 2023-2026. It was reported that a meeting with the Cabildo of Tenerife agreed that the rescue will lapse, but opens the door to future collaboration to promote more PMR licences and meet the 5% ratio.
For the residents of Santa Cruz, these measures will mean a tangible improvement: more adapted taxis, greater security with cameras, and an app that will facilitate requesting a taxi from a mobile phone. Those interested in the aids can consult the bases on the municipal website.
