Families of students with Specific Educational Support Needs (NEAE) presented to PSOE of Puerto del Rosario the lack of places and funding, as well as the absence of alternatives for those over 21 years old.
PSOE of Puerto del Rosario met this Thursday with families of students with Specific Educational Support Needs (NEAE) to understand firsthand the difficulties they face. During the meeting, parents reported the lack of resources and adequate funding, the insufficiency of places in educational centres, and the absence of training and job alternatives for young people over 21 who leave the educational system.
The meeting was attended by the socialist spokesperson for Education in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Marcos Hernández; the senator for Fuerteventura, Paloma Hernández Cerezo; regional deputies Rosa Bella Cabrera and Manuel Hernández Cerezo; the Education councillor of the Puerto del Rosario City Council, Toñi Fernández Aragón; the general secretary of the Socialist Group, Tacoremi Gutiérrez Gutiérrez, and the local secretary for Education, Javier Tendero. The ADIVIA association was also present.
The families raised several issues affecting the educational support for their children. Among them, they pointed out the need for specific training for teachers and support staff, as well as deficiencies in the new Adapted Vocational Training pathways. However, the most concerning point is the lack of alternatives once young people turn 21 and leave the educational system, leaving them without training or job options.
For their part, the socialist representatives detailed the amendments and proposals presented during the current legislative session in the Parliament of the Canary Islands to improve support for students with NEAE. They highlighted the lines of collaboration established with associations and families and reaffirmed their commitment to continue gathering demands and conveying them to various institutions.
PSOE of Puerto del Rosario expressed its willingness to maintain a permanent dialogue with the families and associations involved. The Education councillor, Toñi Fernández Aragón, emphasized the importance of listening to those affected in order to design educational policies that respond to their real needs.
The meeting is part of a series of contacts that PSOE is maintaining with educational groups on the island. Families hope that these demands will translate into concrete measures that improve the quality of life for students with NEAE and their families in Puerto del Rosario.
