The Public Works Department of the Government of the Canary Islands has announced nighttime diversions on the FV-20 road from Monday, July 27, to continue with the resurfacing of the new motorway that will connect Puerto del Rosario with La Caldereta.
Drivers travelling on the FV-20 in Fuerteventura will encounter nighttime closures starting next Monday. The Public Works, Housing and Mobility Department of the Government of the Canary Islands has informed that, between 10:00 PM on Monday, July 27, and 5:30 AM on Thursday, July 30, traffic will be diverted on a section of this road to continue with the resurfacing works of the new Puerto del Rosario-La Caldereta motorway.
The diversion will affect the section between the roundabout at the Antigua junction, heading towards Puerto del Rosario, and the Risco Prieto roundabout. According to the General Directorate of Road Infrastructure, led by Rosana Melián, this action is necessary to advance the execution of the resurfacing of the road that will connect the new motorway with the capital of Fuerteventura through the Antigua junction.
During the four nights of work, traffic will be diverted via the FV-10 road in both directions. The diversion will be properly signposted and will have the supervision of construction workers to facilitate vehicle transit. The General Directorate has requested that drivers exercise caution, respect the temporary signage, and follow the instructions of authorized personnel at all times.
This intervention is part of the project for the variant of the FV-1, FV-3, and FV-2 roads, a key infrastructure to improve the connection between Puerto del Rosario and La Caldereta. The new motorway will help alleviate traffic on one of the busiest roads on the island, especially during peak hours and tourist season.
The resurfacing works are part of the final phase of the project, which has included the construction of new junctions and the improvement of the road surface in various sections. It is expected that, once these works are completed, the motorway will open to traffic in the coming months, marking a significant advance for mobility in Fuerteventura.
For residents and visitors travelling between the south of the island and the capital, it is recommended to plan journeys in advance during the affected nights. The diversions may slightly extend travel times, although the Department assures that they have been designed to minimize inconvenience.
The works on the Puerto del Rosario-La Caldereta motorway have been a long-standing demand from residents and the tourism sector in Fuerteventura, who see this infrastructure as an opportunity to improve connectivity and road safety. The total investment for the project exceeds 40 million euros, co-financed with European funds.
Once the resurfacing works are completed, vertical and horizontal signage will be installed, as well as drainage systems and safety barriers. The full opening of the motorway is expected by the end of this year, according to the Department's estimates.
