The Cabildo of Gran Canaria has made available six specialised professionals for the wildfire firefighting operation in the Community of Madrid, following a request from the Ministry of the Interior due to the serious situation in the region.
The Cabildo of Gran Canaria has mobilised six highly qualified professionals to support the fight against the wildfires ravaging the Community of Madrid. The team, consisting of extinguishing technicians, analysts, firefighters, communications operators, and environmental agents, is ready to deploy to the Peninsula if required by the authorities.
This offer responds to the request from the National Centre for Emergency Monitoring and Coordination (CENEM), which is part of the General Directorate of Civil Protection and Emergencies of the Ministry of the Interior. The national alert for wildfires has been activated due to the severity of the fires in various parts of the Madrid region, exacerbated by the merging of two fronts and the evacuation or confinement of tens of thousands of people.
Among the profiles offered by the island's Cabildo is an extinguishing technician capable of directing operations, coordinating aerial resources, and managing ground extinguishing efforts. An analytical technician, specialised in fire behaviour analysis and coordination support, has also been made available, as well as a firefighter sergeant with experience in wildfires and sector management.
The team is completed by a communications operator, responsible for managing operational communications and logistical support, and two environmental agents who will carry out surveillance, monitoring of the fire, and technical support on the ground. All of them belong to the island's wildfire extinguishing and prevention services of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria.
The president of the Cabildo, Antonio Morales, emphasised that this collaboration is part of the island government's "collaborative and supportive vision," both with the other islands and with the entire Spanish state and even abroad. Morales recalled that Gran Canaria has already provided assistance in previous emergencies, such as the DANA in Valencia, and highlighted that the professionalism and effectiveness of its prevention and extinguishing services are widely recognised.
The situation in the Community of Madrid is critical. The wildfires, which began several days ago, have forced the evacuation and confinement of thousands of people in municipalities in the northwest of the region. Adverse weather conditions, with high temperatures and gusty winds, have complicated extinguishing efforts and favoured the spread of the flames. The merging of two large fronts has generated a sixth-generation fire, with extreme behaviour and difficult control.
The Gran Canaria team joins the forces already deployed by other autonomous communities and the Military Emergency Unit (UME). The coordination of all resources is carried out through CENEM, which centralises requests for assistance and assigns available means according to the needs of each moment.
For the island's residents, this collaboration reinforces Gran Canaria's image of solidarity and highlights the preparedness of its emergency services. The Cabildo has reiterated its commitment to continue training and equipping its professionals to respond to both local emergencies and those that arise in other territories.
The six specialists are on alert and could be mobilised at any moment. The Madrid authorities have expressed their gratitude for the offer and positively value Gran Canaria's willingness, which once again demonstrates its capacity to respond to disasters.
