The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has announced the passing of psychiatrist Rafael Inglott, Favourite Son of the city since 2019. Mayor Carolina Darias has conveyed her condolences to his family.

Psychiatrist Rafael Inglott Jiménez, recognised as Favourite Son of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria since 2019, passed away this Saturday, according to the city council. Mayor Carolina Darias expressed on behalf of the municipal corporation her deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the doctor.

Darias highlighted Inglott's “extraordinary professional career,” his “commitment to a more humane and approachable healthcare,” and his “permanent contribution to scientific knowledge and the well-being of the citizens.” The City Council awarded him the title of Favourite Son in recognition of his work in advancing psychiatry and improving care for people with mental health issues.

Inglott was a key figure in the modernisation of mental health in the Canaries. A specialist in Psychiatry, he directed the Psychiatric Hospital of Gran Canaria and was head of the Mental Health Area at the Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín University Hospital until his retirement. He was also the first director of the Comprehensive Care Programme for Sick Doctors (PAIME) of the Official College of Physicians of Las Palmas, a pioneering initiative to support medical professionals with mental health issues or addictions.

His legacy endures in the Canary health system, where he promoted a more humane and approachable model. The news of his passing has generated expressions of sorrow in the health and social sectors of the island. For now, details of the funeral or posthumous tribute have not been announced.
