The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council has replaced 32 sodium vapour lamps with LED lights on Bravo Murillo street, a move that reduces energy consumption by 66% and improves road safety.
Bravo Murillo street, one of the main arteries of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, now boasts completely renewed lighting. The City Council, through the Department of Roads, Works and Lighting, has replaced the 32 old sodium vapour streetlights with modern high-efficiency LED units.
This intervention is part of the municipal plan to modernise public lighting being carried out in various parts of the city. The councillor for the area, Carlos Díaz, explained that the aim is to “provide a higher quality service to residents by incorporating more efficient solutions that improve the lighting of our streets.”
According to data provided by the City Council, the change will reduce the energy consumption of the installation by nearly 66%. Additionally, carbon dioxide emissions and maintenance needs will decrease compared to the previous system, which had already become obsolete.
The new LED lights provide more uniform and comfortable illumination, enhancing visibility for both pedestrians and drivers. They also incorporate an automatic regulation system that adjusts the light intensity according to different times of the night, thus optimising energy consumption during off-peak hours.
This initiative is part of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council's strategy to move towards a more sustainable and efficient city. In recent months, the council has been renewing lighting in several streets and avenues, prioritising those with higher traffic or that were in greater disrepair.
Carlos Díaz highlighted that “we continue to modernise the public lighting of the city to provide a higher quality service, contributing to reducing energy consumption and environmental impact.” The councillor reminded that these actions not only represent economic savings for municipal coffers but also improve the safety and comfort of citizens.
Local residents have positively assessed the change. The new lighting, which is whiter and more uniform, has transformed the nighttime appearance of the street, making it more welcoming and safer for walking. Some merchants along the street have noted that the improved lighting could help increase commercial activity during nighttime hours.
The renewal of Bravo Murillo is just one more step within the City Council's energy efficiency plan. It is expected that in the coming months, other streets in the district will be addressed, with the aim of extending LED technology throughout the city. The accumulated energy savings will allow the council to reinvest in new improvements.
The reduction of CO₂ emissions is also a significant aspect. With this initiative, the City Council is advancing towards meeting sustainable development goals and combating climate change, a commitment that the local government has prioritised.
Looking ahead, the councillor revealed that new locations are being studied to continue replacing lamps. The goal is for all public lighting in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to be LED within a five-year horizon, which would mean a global energy saving of over 50%.
For now, the residents of Bravo Murillo are already enjoying a more illuminated and efficient street. The investment made, which has not been disclosed in specific figures, will pay off in a few years thanks to savings on electricity bills and maintenance.
