The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has put out to tender the redevelopment works of Plaza América for 2.56 million euros, with an execution period of 12 months. The project aims to complete the connection of Avenida José Mesa y López with Guanarteme.
The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has initiated the tender for the redevelopment works of Plaza América, a project valued at 2.56 million euros that will transform one of the main traffic hubs in the Guanarteme neighbourhood. The work, financed through the Cooperation Plan of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, has a 12-month execution period, and interested companies can submit their bids until 14:00 on the upcoming 19th of August.
The intervention will take place over an approximate area of 15,000 square meters and will include the construction of a new roundabout at the junction of Avenida José Mesa y López with Fernando Guanarteme, El Salvador, Mario César, and Habana streets. The aim, according to the council, is to create a new distribution point for vehicular and pedestrian traffic in an area that experiences high traffic intensity.
The works will complete the extension of Mesa y López to Cayetana Manrique street and improve the continuity of the road network towards Guanarteme. Of the 15,000 square meters, around 4,000 will be allocated to pedestrian spaces and about 2,000 to green areas and gardens. The remainder will correspond to the new road network and associated infrastructure.
The project includes the installation of approximately 1,300 square meters of photocatalytic pavement, a material designed to help reduce the presence of certain polluting gases in the air. Urban sustainable drainage systems will also be incorporated to manage rainwater more efficiently, in addition to new garden areas conceived as biodiversity islands, with plant species adapted to the environment.
The intervention will include adapted pedestrian pathways, lowered curbs, and tactile paving to facilitate movement for visually impaired individuals. The urban design will also feature differentiated ceramic pavement that will recall the route of the old ravine that ran through this area of Guanarteme.
The works will also include the installation of bicycle parking, measures to reduce traffic speed, and the renewal of public lighting, telecommunications, low voltage, sanitation, and drainage networks. Additionally, the new roads and existing streets affected by the intervention will be asphalted.
The work will be carried out in phases to reduce impacts on mobility and maintain traffic flow through marked provisional detours. The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has highlighted that this action will improve the connection between two key areas of the city, benefiting thousands of drivers and pedestrians who pass through this point daily.
Funding through the Cooperation Plan of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria with the municipalities ensures that the project does not impose an additional burden on municipal finances. The tender is part of the council's strategy to improve mobility and sustainability in the capital of Gran Canaria.
Residents of Guanarteme and users of the area had long been requesting an intervention at this traffic hub, considered one of the most problematic in the district. With this work, it is hoped to alleviate congestion and provide a more pleasant and accessible urban space.
