The Local Police of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has arrested four people, one of whom is a minor, for brutally assaulting a couple in the neighbourhood of Guanarteme to steal their mobile phone and a bag. The events occurred in the early hours on José Franchy Roca street.
A night of terror was experienced by a couple in the capital's neighbourhood of Guanarteme. Five young people, three men and two women, assaulted a man and a woman to steal their belongings. The Local Police of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has arrested four of the alleged assailants.
The events occurred around 02:50 hours this Sunday on José Franchy Roca street. According to police sources, the couple had an argument with the group of five people. After the verbal dispute, the young people pounced on them.
The man was thrown to the ground and was kicked and punched multiple times. The woman was also assaulted by two of the group members, who hit her several times on the head and face. The victim had visible abrasions on her face.
Robbery with violence and recovered items
During the attack, the assailants stole from the man a black shoulder bag containing his wallet with identification and about 400 euros in cash. The woman had her mobile phone stolen. The couple was taken by ambulance from the Canary Emergency Service to the Materno Infantil University Hospital, where the man remained under observation due to the severity of his injuries.
A witness who had recorded part of the prior argument showed the video to the officers and the victims, who identified four of the alleged assailants without a doubt. They are three men — aged 17, 18, and 24, of Moroccan origin — and a 27-year-old Spanish woman.
While the victims were being attended to, the officers located three men and a woman walking in the area. The victims identified them in the video, so they were arrested as suspected perpetrators of a robbery with violence. During the search, the officers found the transport pass in the name of one of the victims hidden in the shoe of one of the assailants.
Additionally, the doorman of a nearby nightclub later handed over the stolen shoulder bag. The employee saw two men throw it onto the public road. Among the recovered items are the shoulder bag itself, which contained a white shirt, a black wallet, a deodorant, an identity document of the victim, and the transport pass.
Local angle and advice for residents
The incident has caused alarm among the residents of Guanarteme, a generally quiet neighbourhood in the capital of Gran Canaria. The Local Police advises citizens that, in the event of any conflict situation in public, they should distance themselves from the place and call 092 instead of confronting the assailants. They also recommend not carrying valuables in plain sight at night.
The detainees will be brought before a judge in the coming hours. The 17-year-old minor will be placed at the disposal of the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office. The investigation continues to locate the fifth suspect, who remains at large.
