The Granadilla de Abona City Council and the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Canary Government have initiated a collaboration to recover and conserve sites such as Montaña Ifara, the Casona, and the old Post Office of Charco del Pino.
The Granadilla de Abona City Council and the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Canary Government have taken the first step towards a strategic alliance aimed at the protection and recovery of the municipality's historical, cultural, and natural heritage. A joint technical visit to several sites of special relevance has served to assess their conservation status and lay the groundwork for a future collaboration agreement.
The tour was attended by the General Director of Culture and Cultural Heritage, Miguel Ángel Clavijo; the Mayor of Granadilla de Abona, José Domingo Regalado; the Councillor for Historical Heritage, Fredi Oramas; members of the citizen platform DefensAbona, as well as technical staff from both administrations. During the day, the Natural Monument Montaña Ifara and Los Riscos, the Casona, and the old Post Office of Charco del Pino, as well as the History Museum of Granadilla de Abona, were inspected.
At the Natural Monument Montaña Ifara and Los Riscos, a protected area that houses two volcanic cones of great interest, the needs of the site and possible joint actions to ensure its preservation were analysed. Miguel Ángel Clavijo highlighted that “this first meeting marks the beginning of a joint line of work between both institutions. Granadilla de Abona has exceptional heritage and one of the largest collections of Assets of Cultural Interest (BIC) in Tenerife, so we will continue to advance in its protection and enhancement.”
The tour continued at the Casona and the old Post Office of Charco del Pino, two properties of high historical value, as well as at the History Museum of Granadilla de Abona. There, the necessary actions for their rehabilitation and their use as spaces linked to the history and identity of the municipality were evaluated. The Mayor, José Domingo Regalado, stated that “this institutional collaboration represents a great opportunity to continue recovering spaces that are part of our history. Our commitment is to preserve this legacy and bring it closer to the citizens as part of our municipality's identity.”
The visit also laid the groundwork for a future collaboration agreement between the Canary Government and the Granadilla de Abona City Council, aimed at promoting projects for the protection, recovery, and conservation of assets of great historical, cultural, and heritage relevance. The Councillor for Historical Heritage, Fredi Oramas, explained that “from the council, we have been promoting initiatives to protect and recover our heritage for some time. This visit reinforces the work done and opens new avenues for collaboration to make important projects for the municipality a reality.”
The city council also wanted to highlight the commitment of the Platform in Defence of the Heritage of Granadilla de Abona DefensAbona, a civic entity that carries out significant research, dissemination, awareness-raising, and defence work for the historical, cultural, and natural heritage of the municipality. Its participation in the technical visit underscores the involvement of civil society in the conservation of these assets.
With this new line of collaboration between the Canary Government and the Granadilla de Abona City Council, progress is being made towards a common goal: to protect, conserve, and recover the natural, historical, and cultural legacy of the municipality. Both administrations will work in a coordinated manner to promote actions that allow the rehabilitation of these heritage sites, enhance their richness, and contribute to preserving the collective memory of Granadilla de Abona for present and future generations.
