El Cabezo beach in El Médano (Granadilla de Abona) will host the Wind&Waves Festival from July 31 to August 9. The event includes the Open, Junior, and Masters World Championship of the PWA/WWT and debuts the Open Championship of Spain and the Foil Drive Challenge.
The winds and waves of El Médano will once again be the backdrop for the Wind&Waves Festival, which will celebrate its twelfth edition from July 31 to August 9 at El Cabezo beach. Organised by Blue Light Events, the event will bring together the international elite of windsurfing with the third consecutive edition of the Open, Junior, and Masters World Championship of the PWA/WWT, in both female and male categories.
The official presentation took place at the Playa Surf Hotel and was attended by the Vice President and Tourism Councillor of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Lope Afonso; the CEO of Tenerife Tourism, Dimple Melwani; the Mayor of Granadilla de Abona, José Domingo Regalado; the Councillor of Tourism of the Granadilla de Abona City Council, Eudita Mendoza; and the festival's CEO, Daniel Bruch.
Lope Afonso highlighted that the Wind&Waves Festival is “a magnificent example of how Tenerife has managed to turn its extraordinary natural conditions into a competitive advantage to position itself as an international reference destination for water sports.” The councillor emphasised that the event projects the image of the island in strategic markets and attracts visitors seeking experiences linked to sport, nature, and sustainability.
“From the Cabildo, we continue to support events that generate economic activity, energise our municipalities, and help diversify Tenerife's tourist offer,” Afonso stated. “El Médano is once again showcased on the world stage of windsurfing and demonstrates, once again, the island's capacity to host top-level competitions alongside a programme open to residents and visitors.”
For her part, Dimple Melwani noted that hosting a new edition of the Wind&Waves Festival “consolidates Tenerife as a reference destination for hosting major outdoor sporting events and highlights exceptional natural conditions that place us among the best places in the world for windsurfing and other water sports.” The CEO of Tenerife Tourism added that the event generates significant economic and promotional returns, reinforcing the island's positioning as a quality destination for active tourism.
The Mayor of Granadilla de Abona, José Domingo Regalado, emphasised that the festival “has become an essential event that projects the name of Granadilla de Abona and El Médano to the whole world.” Regalado pointed out that the municipality is now on the international windsurfing map, hosting the world elite and offering a programme of activities that goes beyond competition. “From the City Council, we continue to firmly support events of this magnitude, which generate wealth, energise our economy, and strengthen the tourist and sporting brand of Granadilla de Abona,” he stated.
The Councillor of Tourism, Eudita Mendoza, explained that the festival “is much more than a sporting competition: it is an experience that brings together families, enthusiasts, and professionals around the sea, with a wide programme designed for all audiences.” Mendoza highlighted the commercial area, gastronomic spaces, children's area, and live music as elements that turn the event into a meeting point for the community. “We work to make each edition more complete and accessible, consolidating El Médano as a benchmark for leisure, sport, and coexistence,” she concluded.
Dani Bruch, the event promoter, assured that El Médano has unique conditions: “wind, waves, and a community integrated with the sport, as it is one of the few urban beaches on the circuit.” Bruch emphasised that the strong support from the local community is one of the keys to the championship's success.
The Wind&Waves Festival has the backing of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Islas Canarias Latitud de Vida brand; the Cabildo of Tenerife, via Tenerife Tourism and the Tenerife Despierta Emociones brand; and the Granadilla de Abona City Council. Additionally, the event is sponsored by Playa Surf CBbC Hotel, Balearia, Veinte 04, Future Fly Boards, and Foil Drive.
As new features for this edition, the festival incorporates the Open Championship of Spain and the Foil Drive Challenge, a test that combines foil and electric propulsion. The programme will also include parallel activities such as introductory windsurfing workshops, exhibitions, and concerts, aiming to attract both enthusiasts and the general public. El Médano is thus preparing for ten days of sport, leisure, and coexistence in one of the most emblematic beach locations in southern Tenerife.
