The Ingenio Town Council, in collaboration with the Red Cross, has launched the project "Active and Healthy Ageing for Seniors in the Municipality of Ingenio", which will run until December 31 with workshops, cultural activities, and leisure activities.

The Ingenio Town Council, through the Department for Seniors and in collaboration with the Spanish Red Cross, presented this Thursday the project "Active and Healthy Ageing for Seniors in the Municipality of Ingenio". The initiative, which will extend until December 31, 2026, aims to promote the well-being and autonomy of older people in the municipality, as well as their active participation in the community.

The programme includes a varied offer of workshops and group activities focused on promoting healthy habits, cognitive stimulation, and creating spaces for social interaction. Cultural outings and leisure activities have also been scheduled, with the aim of preventing unwanted loneliness and strengthening social relationships among seniors.

The Councillor for Seniors, Catalina Sánchez, emphasised the department's commitment to active ageing: "We reaffirm our commitment to promoting active and healthy ageing, driving new actions that expand and reinforce the range of activities aimed at older people in the municipality".

During the presentation, the project's objectives, the planned programming, and the procedure for participation were detailed. Seniors from Ingenio and El Carrizal are invited to join this initiative, which, according to municipal sources, will contribute to improving their quality of life and fostering active participation in the community.

The project is part of a local strategy to address the needs of an increasingly numerous demographic. According to municipal registry data, more than 20% of Ingenio's population is over 65 years old, a trend similar to that of the Canary Islands as a whole. With this initiative, the Town Council aims to provide resources that allow seniors to remain physically and mentally active, while also strengthening the social support network.

The planned workshops cover everything from adapted physical activities to memory and cognitive stimulation sessions, as well as talks on nutrition and health. Cultural outings will include visits to museums, points of interest, and natural spaces on the island. Additionally, weekly meeting points will be established in different neighbourhoods to facilitate participation for those who have mobility difficulties.

The collaboration with the Spanish Red Cross brings experience in companionship and loneliness prevention programmes, as well as specialised volunteering. The organisation already runs similar initiatives in other municipalities in Gran Canaria, and its participation in Ingenio will allow for an expanded reach of the project.

Registrations are already open at the offices of the Department for Seniors and at the day centres in the municipality. Interested parties can obtain more information by calling the department's phone number or visiting the information points that will be set up in the coming weeks in the public squares of Ingenio and El Carrizal.

The project is funded by municipal funds and a grant from the Gran Canaria Cabildo for active ageing programmes. The Town Council hopes that the initiative will be well received and serve as a basis for future editions.
