The Tarifa native based in the Canary Islands and the Gran Canarian top the regional classification of the Open Cup, held at El Burrero Beach (Ingenio).
El Burrero Beach, in the municipality of Ingenio, has been the venue for the 2026 Canary Islands Wingfoil Slalom Open Cup, a competition that has crowned Mar de Arce and Jeremy Rodríguez as champions of the Canary Islands Cup. The event, which brought together over 30 riders, served as a precursor to the Gran Canaria GWA Wingfoil World Cup.
In the women's category of the Open Cup, Spanish rider Nía Suardíaz, based in Tarifa, took the victory. The second place went to Mar de Arce, also from Tarifa but based in the Canary Islands and representing the Canakite Experiences Sports Club, one of the event's organisers. Majorera Elena Moreno Romero completed the podium.
In the men's category, Frenchman Tom Pansard claimed the top spot in the Open Cup. Italians Francesco Cappuzzo and Sebastiano Zorzi finished second and third, respectively, in a ranking marked by the high level of the international fleet.
The Canary Islands Cup is determined by the classification of athletes representing the archipelago within the Open event. Thus, Mar de Arce achieved the first position in the women's category, followed by Elena Moreno Romero (second) and Lanzarote's Anais Mestres Micieces (third). In the men's category, Jeremy Rodríguez was crowned champion of the Canary Islands Cup, followed by his teammates Ángel Granda and Francisco Javier Espín.
After the Open Cup, El Burrero is hosting the FreeFly-Slalom World Cup on July 21 and 22. From July 23 to 25, it will be the turn of Surf-Freestyle, featuring the best international specialists in speed, strategy, and aerial maneuvers. The Gran Canaria GWA Wingfoil World Cup 2026 brings together over 120 athletes from 13 countries and solidifies Gran Canaria as one of the major global venues for wind sports.
The event is organised by the Canakite Experiences Sports Club, El Burrero Nautical Club, and the Ingenio City Council, with the collaboration of the Royal Canary Islands Sailing Federation and Spar, and the support of the Tourism and Sports departments of the Gran Canaria Cabildo, Promotur Islas Canarias, and the Canary Islands Government's Sports Department. The public can follow the competition from the beach during a week that combines elite sports, environmental activities, and proposals open to the public.
The reigning world champions, Frenchman Bastien Escofet and Tarifa's Nía Suardíaz, lead the men's and women's lists of the World Cup, facing rivals such as Italian Cappuzzo, Frenchmen Romain Ghio and Kylie Belloeuvre, or Austrian Viola Lippitsch. Excitement is in the air in the waters of El Burrero.
