The piece by the company DDCdanza, a finalist for the Max Awards 2026, is performed at 20:30 in the Plaza de Santo Domingo after the postponement in March due to bad weather.
This evening, at 20:30, the Plaza de Santo Domingo in Santa Cruz de La Palma hosts the performance of "Doma", the production by DDCdanza which is nominated for two awards at the upcoming Max Awards: Best Choreography and Best Dance Show. The performance, which was to take place in March but was suspended due to inclement weather, closes the summer programming of the cycle A City in Dance.
Directed by Daniel Doña and performed by him alongside Cristian Martín, "Doma" explores the limits of domestication as a metaphor for rebellion against imposed traditions. The work fuses flamenco, Spanish dance, and contemporary creation to address themes such as cruelty, abuse of power, and violence exercised in the name of honour or customs. According to the production, it is a rebellion that takes place both among artistic disciplines and within each of them.
The show premiered in September 2024 at the Fira Tàrrega, one of Europe's main showcases for street arts, with the support of the Canal Choreographic Centre, the Madrid City Council, and the International Circus and Theatre School (CAU). Since then, it has toured festivals across Spain, including an open rehearsal at the Canal Theatres in Madrid.
Daniel Doña, who has led DDCdanza since 2013, has an impressive track record: Max Award for Best Choreography in 2009, HEBE Honor Award in 2016, Max for Best Male Dance Performer in 2019, and the Lorca Awards for Best Choreography in 2022 and Best Show in 2026, the latter specifically for "Doma". In 2023, he was appointed artistic director and choreographer of the theme park "Shima Spain Village" in Japan.
In the category of Best Dance Show at the XXIX Max Awards, which will be presented in Mérida, "Doma" competes with productions such as "Carrer 024" by Sol Picó; "Faula" by Roser López Espinosa; "Folk as queer" by La Ikònica; and "No" by La Venidera.
The cycle A City in Dance, which has been running for a year and a half in Santa Cruz de La Palma, was born in January 2024 with "David and Goliath" in the Plaza de España. Since then, it has brought contemporary dance to unconventional heritage spaces in the capital, with pieces such as "Beginners" by Carlota Mantecón (November 2024); "Escambo" by the Mari Paula company (March 2025); or "Blindfolded" by the Catalan company ELELEI (May of this year). The project is produced by Ars Vita Cultural Management, directed by Charo González Palmero, and funded by the Culture Department of the Santa Cruz de La Palma City Council.
The day before the performance, students from the Maika Lerín Municipal Dance School participated in a workshop led by Daniel Doña himself, where curiosity, crossbreeding, and innovation were, according to the organisation, central to the session.
The event is today, Wednesday 22nd July at 20:30 in the Plaza de Santo Domingo, with free entry. The organisation recommends arriving early to enjoy the surroundings and secure a good spot.
