The spokesperson for the PP in the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Jimena Delgado, has announced that they will present a request at the next Plenary to dedicate a public space to footballer Yéremi Pino, World Cup champion with Spain.
The Popular Party in the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has taken the first step for the city to permanently recognise Yéremi Pino, the Gran Canarian footballer who became World Cup champion with the Spanish national team on July 20. The popular spokesperson, Jimena Delgado, announced this Friday that her municipal group will present a request at the next Plenary for the City Council to dedicate a public space to the player.
The initiative comes days after Spain lifted the World Cup in Madrid, with a massive celebration in the capital. Pino, born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is the only footballer from the city to have achieved this milestone with the senior national team, as highlighted by the PP. "Our city has the privilege of having a world champion, and we believe that this achievement deserves permanent recognition from all citizens," Delgado stated.
The popular spokesperson expressed her surprise at the lack of reaction from the local government, led by the socialist Carolina Darias, which has yet to promote any institutional act. "We find it strange that other city councils have already paid tribute to their world champions, and yet the city that saw Yéremi Pino born has not taken any steps," she asserted.
The PP believes that the World Cup victory transcends sports and has united thousands of citizens. "During these days, we have seen how neighbours of all ages, from different neighbourhoods and ideologies have celebrated together a success that we haven't experienced in a long time," Delgado highlighted, emphasising values such as effort, teamwork, and pride in representing the country.
The popular proposal seeks for the tribute to be permanent, as is the case with other prominent figures in culture, science, or society in the city. "Just as we remember those who have contributed to the cultural, scientific, or social development of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, we must also recognise those who have taken the name of our city to the highest levels of world sport," the spokesperson explained.
The PP is confident that the municipal government will heed the request and that it will have the support of the entire corporation. "We are convinced that this tribute is above any political differences. Yéremi Pino has made history for Spain and also for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Now it is up to his city to give back a small part of all the pride he has made us feel," Delgado concluded.
So far, the City Council has not officially commented on the request, although the PP remains optimistic. The initiative will be debated at the next Plenary, likely in August, and it is expected that Mayor Carolina Darias will evaluate the proposal. Meanwhile, Gran Canarian fans continue to celebrate the success of their compatriot, who has already been received by other Spanish municipalities that have honoured their champions.
