The Deputy Minister of Sports of the Canary Islands Government and the General Director presented the initiatives ACTIVÍDATE and GANAR at the Cabildo of Lanzarote, which aim to promote physical exercise and values in grassroots sports.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Canary Islands Government have taken another step in their joint strategy to promote physical activity on the island. At a meeting of the Insular Sports Table held this Friday, the ACTIVÍDATE and GANAR projects were presented to representatives from the seven municipalities of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
The Deputy Minister for Physical Activity and Sports, Ángel Sabroso, and the General Director of the area, María Rojas, were responsible for detailing both initiatives. The meeting was chaired by the insular councillor for Physical Activity and Sports, Juan Monzón, who thanked the presence of regional representatives and highlighted the importance of coordination between administrations.
The ACTIVÍDATE project, which has already been launched in the municipality of Tinajo, represents a paradigm shift in the relationship between health and sport. As Sabroso explained, this initiative allows general practitioners to directly prescribe sports practice to their patients. Once the prescription is made, the patient is referred to an Active Physical Exercise Unit, where a professional develops a personalised exercise plan. Sabroso described the programme as "a before and after in healthy living in the Canary Islands."
Meanwhile, María Rojas presented the GANAR project, focused on finding safe and comfortable spaces for sports practice, with special attention to grassroots categories. Rojas noted that Lanzarote is "a leading island in sports" and that GANAR aims to reinforce values such as respect and responsibility, and will include training talks for both athletes and their families.
Juan Monzón valued both initiatives and emphasised that they will contribute to boosting physical activity and sport on the island. He also highlighted the work of the Insular Sports Table as a "fundamental space for coordinated work" and to ensure that sporting events on the insular calendar are held with maximum guarantees.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to hold a new meeting in the coming weeks to address other matters of interest, including the organisation of the Insular Sports Fair, which will take place in October in the island's capital. Monzón thanked the municipalities for their willingness and collaboration in holding such meetings.
For the residents of Lanzarote, these projects represent an opportunity to improve their health and well-being through sport, with institutional support that facilitates access to physical activity prescribed by health professionals. Additionally, the commitment to grassroots sports with the GANAR programme aims to educate new generations in fundamental values.
