The musician, writer, and educator Carmelo Sánchez will present the recital 'Atlántico, calado de ida y ñandutí de vuelta' on July 16 at the XIII Campus of Ethnography and Folklore of Ingenio, uniting the Canary Islands and Latin America through music.

On July 16, at 20:00 hours, the Campus of Ethnography and Folklore of Ingenio will host a unique recital that bridges the Canary Islands and Latin America. Carmelo Sánchez, a Gran Canaria musician, writer, and educator, will close the day with his proposal 'Atlántico, calado de ida y ñandutí de vuelta', a sonic journey through emigration and shared memory.

A Musical Journey Between Two Shores

Sánchez's concert draws inspiration from the connection between Canarian calado and Paraguayan ñandutí, two artisanal traditions that symbolize centuries of cultural exchange. The repertoire combines original compositions with pieces from the Latin American folk songbook, creating a dialogue between landscapes, stories, and traditions.

The musician's proposal, who also teaches Spanish Language and Literature at IES Vecindario, focuses on migratory processes and how music has accompanied population movements between both shores of the Atlantic. An approach that, according to the organizers, directly connects with Canarian identity.

A Multifaceted Career

Carmelo Sánchez, who holds a degree in Hispanic Philology from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has always combined his passion for teaching with music and literature. Before dedicating himself to teaching, he worked as a broadcaster and presenter in municipal media in Gran Canaria, and as a writer, he has published several works, including the regional novel 'La estrella del rabo' (Ediciones Idea, 2012).

In the musical field, Sánchez began his training with the Agrupación Musical Los Cochineros de Ingenio and later directed the Agrupación Folclórica Los Artesanos de la Villa de Ingenio. In 1992, he founded the group Palosangre, with which he recorded the album 'Itinerario', consolidating his role as a composer. In recent years, he has developed solo projects such as the demos 'Signo' and 'Noviembre'.

An Appointment with Roots

Sánchez's recital will be the grand finale of the XIII Campus of Ethnography and Folklore of Ingenio, which will kick off at 19:00 hours with presentations from historians at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Javier Adonay Cruz will discuss the legacy of Algueran women; María Nieves Rodríguez will address heritage knowledge from an advertising perspective; and Juan José Rivero will analyse the popular dichetes of Ingenio as an element of identity.

For attendees, the evening promises to be an immersive experience in Canarian popular culture, with a Latin American touch that invites reflection on the ties that bind us. The event, which is free to access, will be held at the Casa de la Cultura de Ingenio. An opportunity to enjoy the music of Carmelo Sánchez and rediscover the shared roots with the other side of the Atlantic.
