The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasts calima at altitude and maximum temperatures of 34 ºC in the interior of Fuerteventura and the midlands of Gran Canaria this Thursday, with tropical nights not dropping below 24-26 ºC in the most affected areas.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Puerto del Rosario are preparing for a day of intense heat this Thursday. Aemet has issued a warning for maximum temperatures that will reach 34 ºC in the interior of Fuerteventura and the midlands of Gran Canaria, accompanied by calima at altitude that will tint the sky in orange hues.

In the archipelago, the northeast wind will blow with intervals of strong gusts, with locally very strong gusts expected in the interior areas of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and the northwest and southeast slopes of Gran Canaria in the afternoon. At sea, there will be slight waves or moderate swells, with a one-metre swell from the west.

Gran Canaria: Midlands Under the Sun

On the round island, the north will have cloudy intervals in the early and late hours below 600-700 metres, while the rest will have predominantly clear skies. Light calima will be noticeable in the higher areas. Minimum temperatures will rise slightly to moderately in the midlands and interior, and maximums will drop slightly in the north but rise in the south. 34 ºC is expected in the midlands of the Tirajana basin, the southeast, the western interior of the island, and the Tejeda basin. Even in coastal areas of the southeast, reaching this figure is not ruled out. Nights will be tropical, with minimums likely not dropping below 24-26 ºC in the most affected areas. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the expected maximum is 27 ºC and the minimum is 23 ºC.

Fuerteventura and Lanzarote: Heat and Wind

In Fuerteventura, the sky will be mostly clear or clear, with some cloudy intervals in the west at dawn. Temperatures will hardly change in the west, but will rise slightly in the rest. Thermometers will register 32-34 ºC in the southern interior areas, and it is possible that they will exceed 30 ºC on the southeast coasts. The northeast wind will be moderate, with strong intervals south of Jandía and possible very strong gusts in the afternoon. In Puerto del Rosario, the maximum will be 29 ºC and the minimum 22 ºC. In Lanzarote, the day will be similar: mostly clear or clear, with intervals in the north at the beginning and end of the day. Temperatures will remain unchanged or rise slightly, with 30-32 ºC in the southeast. The northeast wind will blow with strong intervals in the interior, with locally very strong gusts in the afternoon. In Arrecife, the expected maximum is 30 ºC and the minimum is 22 ºC.

Tenerife and La Gomera: Tropical Nights

In Tenerife, the north will have cloudy intervals below 700-800 metres, while the rest will be mostly clear. Minimum temperatures will rise slightly, moderately in the midlands, and maximums will drop in the north. Locally, 30 ºC will be reached in the eastern slopes (including the capital) and south. Minimums will not drop below 24-26 ºC in the most affected areas. The northeast wind will blow with strong intervals in the east and the northwest tip. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the maximum will be 31 ºC and the minimum 23 ºC. In La Gomera, the outlook is similar: cloudy intervals in the north below 700-800 metres, and mostly clear in the rest. Minimum temperatures will rise, with maximums that could reach 30 ºC in south and west-facing midlands. Minimums will not drop below 24-26 ºC in the most affected areas. The northeast wind will be strong in the extreme east and northwest. In San Sebastián de La Gomera, the maximum will be 28 ºC and the minimum 22 ºC.

La Palma: A Breather in the North

In La Palma, the north and east will have cloudy intervals below 900-1000 metres, while the rest will be mostly clear, with some intervals on the western coast. Minimum temperatures will remain unchanged or rise slightly, and maximums will drop in the north and east, but will rise slightly in the west. The northeast wind will be strong in the southeast and northwest extremes in the afternoon. In Santa Cruz de La Palma, the maximum will be 27 ºC and the minimum 23 ºC.

For residents and visitors, the recommendation is clear: stay well hydrated, avoid sun exposure during the peak hours of the day, and pay attention to gusts of wind, especially in interior areas. Calima can reduce visibility and affect people with respiratory issues. Aemet is monitoring for possible updates to the warnings.
