The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife initiates a plan of seven actions to reinforce pedestrian safety, starting with the area around CEIP Ágora, on Marrero Torres street, with an investment of €75,587.

The Somosierra neighbourhood, in the Ofra-Costa Sur district, is unveiling road improvements that focus on the youngest. The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has launched an ambitious road safety plan that begins at CEIP Ágora, where hundreds of schoolchildren cross Marrero Torres street every day. The first intervention, with a budget of €75,587, aims to address visibility issues and the high flow of pedestrians that have been concerning families for years.

The company Señalizaciones Villar will be responsible for carrying out the work, which has a completion period of one and a half months. During this time, residents will see how the street transforms with wider sidewalks, new luminous signage using LED technology, and a renewed surface. The action responds to a community demand that highlighted the poor visibility in a section where schoolchildren, families, and vehicle traffic converge.

Accessible routes and tactile pavement

The project is not limited to painting lines. It includes the creation of more accessible pedestrian routes, with the widening of sidewalks at the pedestrian crossing on Marrero Torres street. Additionally, tactile pavement will be installed at existing crossings to facilitate mobility for visually impaired individuals, a detail that makes the project an example of inclusive design.

The complete renewal of the surface, repainting of horizontal signage with indications of school zone, and the incorporation of road markings that remind drivers of the speed limit complete the package of measures. All this aims to ensure that parents can breathe easy when their children walk to school.

A plan of seven interventions

This action is just the first of the seven interventions planned by the Mobility department at various points in Santa Cruz. The City Council, led by the Mobility councillor, has prioritised areas with higher community traffic and accessibility needs. Although the next locations have not yet been detailed, the intention is to extend these improvements to other neighbourhoods in the municipality.

For the residents of Somosierra, the news comes as a relief. Marrero Torres street, especially during peak hours, became a small chaos of cars, backpacks, and rushes. With these works, the council hopes to reduce the risk of accidents and promote a more sustainable and safer mobility. The works will begin in the coming weeks, so patience will be needed with traffic disruptions, although the result promises to be worth it.
