The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Prosecutor's Office is demanding five years in prison for a man accused of two sexual assault offences against his partner. The trial will take place on July 21 at the Provincial Court.

The Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will host the trial on July 21 against a man accused of attempting to sexually assault his then partner on two occasions. The prosecution is seeking a sentence of five years in prison and compensation of 15,000 euros for the victim.

Two episodes of violence in the woman's home

According to the public prosecutor's indictment, the events occurred when the couple was at the woman's home. In the first episode, the accused allegedly began to struggle with the victim with the intention of removing her clothing and engaging in sexual relations, despite her explicit refusal. Ultimately, the man desisted from his conduct.

Hours later, in the early morning, the accused allegedly attempted it again. According to the prosecution, he held her by the wrists and tried to undress her while repeating phrases similar to those from the first attempt. The assault ceased when the woman broke down in tears.

Report and judicial process

After the incidents, the victim reported the situation, leading to judicial proceedings that have culminated in the opening of an oral trial. The prosecution believes that the events constitute two sexual assault offences and is requesting a total sentence of five years in prison, as well as compensation of 15,000 euros for the moral and physical damages suffered.

The accused, who maintains his presumption of innocence, will sit in the dock next Tuesday. The hearing is scheduled for one day only, although it could be extended depending on the evidence and witnesses.

Support for the victim and available resources

The Canary Islands Institute for Equality reminds that victims of gender-based violence have access to free psychological and legal support resources. In Tenerife, the 016 helpline is available 24 hours a day, and women victims of sexual assaults can also contact the support service at 900 222 100.

The Tenerife Women's Association has expressed its support for the complainant and hopes that justice will act decisively. "We cannot allow such conduct to go unpunished," they stated in a press release.

The trial, which will be held behind closed doors, will be closely followed by feminist groups on the island, who have announced a demonstration outside the Provincial Court to express their rejection of any form of gender-based violence.
