Fuerteventura has six beaches where dogs are allowed all year round. Most are concentrated in Puerto del Rosario, although there is also one option in Corralejo.
Dog owners who want to enjoy the Majorcan coast without leaving their pet at home have six alternatives spread across the island. Most are located in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, the capital, and one in La Oliva, in the north. However, none have facilities such as showers or bins.
El Charco, the most accessible dog beach
At Punta de la Arena, north of the desalination plant and near the old road to Puerto Lajas, lies the beach of El Charco. It is an area authorised all year round and, having a substrate of rock and pebbles, it is not the typical postcard of fine sand. Its lesser tourist appeal guarantees low footfall, ideal for dogs that need tranquility.
Access is straightforward from the road, but the uneven terrain can be a challenge for small dogs or people with reduced mobility. Nevertheless, it is one of the most well-known options among residents.
Nido de Las Águilas and Puerto Lajas: two hidden corners
The beach of Nido de Las Águilas, at the mouth of a small ravine within the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, is an isolated and less frequented area. Access is not comfortable, with uneven terrain that can be tricky. There is no signage or facilities, but the reward is an almost pristine natural environment.
Further north, near Puerto Lajas, the area of Las Barretas and behind the chapel is also enabled. It is a quiet space, without tourist services, and with an open and windy environment for much of the year. Perfect for energetic dogs and owners seeking solitude.
El Matorral and Los Pozos: two more options in the capital
At the mouth of the ravine of La Muley lies the area of El Matorral, another of the five points in Puerto del Rosario where dog access is permitted. The landscape is wild, with gravel and natural vegetation, and footfall is scarce. It is not a tourist beach, but a place where dogs can run around without bothering anyone.
At the mouth of the ravine of Negrito, in Los Pozos, we find another dog-friendly area. It is a little-frequented coastal stretch, with dark sand and rocky areas. Like the previous ones, there are no showers, bins, or services, so you need to bring water and bags to collect waste.
Charco de Bristol, the only option in La Oliva
In the municipality of La Oliva, within Corralejo, is the beach of Charco de Bristol, also known as Bristol. It is the only officially designated area in the north of the island for visiting with dogs. It has a stretch of about 100 meters where a pool of calm, shallow water forms, ideal for dogs not used to waves. Its proximity to the urban centre makes it easily accessible on foot or by car.
However, the space is limited and can fill up during peak season, but it remains a popular option for those holidaying in Corralejo.
Recommendations for going to the beach with a dog
Before diving into the water, it is worth remembering that none of these beaches have specific services for pets. Bringing fresh water, a bowl, and bags to collect waste is essential. It is also advisable to protect the dog from the sun with canine sunscreen and to avoid the hottest hours of the day.
In Fuerteventura, the wind can be strong, so choosing a sheltered beach like Bristol or El Charco can make a difference. And, of course, respect the coexistence rules with other beach users.
“More and more tourists and residents are travelling with their pets, and Fuerteventura has partially adapted to this demand. These six beaches are a good starting point,” sources from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura state.
