The Town Hall of Puerto del Rosario has announced that the elderly of the municipality will be responsible for delivering the opening speech for the 2026 Rosario Festivals, which will take place from September 25 to October 7.

The news was made official this Wednesday in the plenary hall of the Town Hall. The mayor, David de Vera, and the councillor for Festivities, Tacoremi Gutiérrez, accompanied by two representatives from the senior centre, María Juliana de Armas and Caty Velázquez, unveiled the details of an edition that focuses on recognising the veterans of the municipality.

For the first time in the history of the patron saint festivities, the elderly will be the town criers. A gesture that, according to the councillor, settles a historical debt: "In the entire history of our festivities, the elderly had not been town criers until now, and we believed it was important that they finally have their moment."

Programme of Events and Star Concert

The festivities will kick off on September 25 with the opening speech by the elderly, and will continue until October 7. Among the scheduled events, the concert by singer Rosario stands out, which will take place on Tuesday, October 6, at 22:00 hours with free entry.

The mayor, David de Vera, emphasised "the pride it brings to the municipality that our elderly are represented not only in the opening speech but also in those important experiences of the Puerto del Rosario festivities over the years." The representatives from the senior centre, for their part, expressed their excitement during the presentation and thanked the Town Hall for the invitation.

A Well-Deserved Recognition

The initiative originated from the governing group several months ago, as explained by Gutiérrez, with the intention of giving visibility to a group that has always been willing to collaborate in all municipal activities. The elderly of Puerto del Rosario are a pillar in the social and cultural life of the capital of Fuerteventura, and their role as town criers is a tribute to their journey.

The Town Hall has called on all residents to participate in enjoying a festival that this year has a special flavour. The 2026 Rosario Festivals promise to be the most emotional in recent years, with a programme that combines tradition, music, and recognition of the elderly.

For the residents of Puerto del Rosario, the opening speech by the elderly will be a unique opportunity to see their grandparents and parents take the stage. The patron saint festivities are the most important event of the year in the town, and this year the spotlight is on those who have built the history of the municipality.

The concert by Rosario, with her repertoire of popular songs, will be the icing on the cake for a few days of celebration. The free entry will ensure that all families can attend and enjoy live music.

The 2026 Rosario Festivals are held in honour of the patron saint of Puerto del Rosario, the Virgin of the Rosary, and attract thousands of people each year. The decision to have the elderly as town criers has been welcomed with satisfaction by residents' associations and the senior centre, which are already excitedly preparing for their participation.

The Town Hall invites all citizens to actively participate in the scheduled events and to accompany the elderly in this historic moment for the municipality.
