The traditional maritime procession of the Virgin of Carmen will gather 60 boats this Thursday at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The day will begin with a mass at La Concepción and culminate in a fireworks display.

The capital of Tenerife is preparing for one of its most emotional summer events. The Virgin of Carmen, patron saint of sailors, will once again navigate the waters of the bay of Santa Cruz next Thursday, July 16, in a maritime procession that will bring together 60 boats. This event, which combines religious fervour and maritime tradition, is one of the most deeply rooted in the city’s calendar.

A route that connects land and sea

The day will start at 18:00 hours with the celebration of the Holy Mass at the Matriz Parish of Our Lady of La Concepción. After the Eucharist, the image will parade through the streets of the city centre to the port, escorted by the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Municipal Band and the Local Police in Gala Uniform. The land route will pass through the church square, Domínguez Alfonso, Padre Moore, Bravo Murillo, and the Cabildo square, leading to the access walkway to the port.

There, the image will be received by the Port Police in gala uniform, who will accompany it to the tugboat VB Canarias, docked at the South Quay. The tugboat will be responsible for transporting the Virgin and her companions to begin the maritime procession, scheduled for 20:00 hours.

Tribute to deceased sailors

During the journey through the bay, the traditional launching of a wreath of flowers will take place in memory of those who have died while engaged in maritime and port activities. This gesture, which moves attendees every year, reinforces the capital’s connection to its fishing tradition. The Artistic Union El Cabo will entertain those waiting at the boarding point, while the historic Correíllo La Palma will once again join the naval procession.

The maritime procession will conclude around 22:00 hours, when the Virgin will return to the Matriz Parish of Our Lady of La Concepción after a fireworks display. The residents of Santa Cruz will be able to enjoy the event from various points along the coast, especially from the South Quay and the maritime avenue, where a large turnout is expected.

A tradition that never fails

The procession of the Virgin of Carmen is an unmissable event for the people of Tenerife, who every year come out in force for the patron saint of sailors. This year, the participation of 60 boats guarantees a visually stunning naval cortege. Singer Chago Melián will provide the musical backdrop during the procession, adding a splash of colour to an evening that promises to be unforgettable.

For those wishing to follow the procession from land, it is recommended to arrive early to secure a good spot, especially in the area of the Cabildo de Tenerife and the seaside promenade. The combination of music, fireworks, and the sound of the sea makes this celebration a perfect plan for a summer evening in the capital.
