The representative from the Telde Day Centre triumphed in all five matches held at the Vecindario Chess Club in Santa Lucía de Tirajana.
Chess once again demonstrated its therapeutic power in the twelfth edition of the Gran Canaria Psychosocial Rehabilitation Day Centre Tournament, which took place at the Vecindario Chess Club. The great winner of the day was Leopoldo Martín Ojeda, a resident of Telde, who claimed the title after winning all five matches he played.
A perfect tournament for the Telde resident
Leopoldo Martín, a user of the Telde Psychosocial Rehabilitation Day Centre, completed an impeccable tournament. His solidity on the board, concentration skills, and emotional control were key to defeating all his opponents. The competition brought together participants from various centres across the island, in a day that combined sport and therapy.
The champion is part of the project "Learning to Think, Alzheimer’s Prevention and Emotional Well-being", promoted by the Telde Chess Club. This initiative uses chess as a tool to improve cognitive abilities, memory, and self-esteem among users.
Recognition of effort and perseverance
From the Telde Chess Club, its president Juan Viera Pérez publicly congratulated Leopoldo Martín on an achievement he described as "well-deserved". He highlighted that the champion maintained an extraordinary emotional balance in each match, a fundamental aspect within the programme's intervention objectives.
The Telde club believes that this new achievement supports the project developed in collaboration with the Telde Day Centre. According to its leaders, the results confirm that the continued practice of chess generates significant benefits for users, promoting cognitive stimulation, socialization, and emotional well-being.
Institutional and social support
The project is backed by CaixaBank and the Vice Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands, as well as the collaboration of the Telde City Council, through the Social Services Department, and the Telde Day Centre itself. The involvement of these entities has been crucial for the initiative's development.
The tournament was organised by the Vecindario Chess Club, under the direction of its president, Antonio Sánchez Alemán. The event brought together participants from various municipalities in Gran Canaria on a day where sport once again served as a vehicle for integration and personal improvement.
For chess and cognitive therapy enthusiasts, the next edition of the tournament is already shaping up to be an unmissable event on the island's calendar. In the meantime, Leopoldo Martín is already an example of how perseverance and play can change lives.
