The Cultural Association Entre Amigos will celebrate the gala of Honours and Distinctions on July 31 at the Juan Ramón Jiménez Municipal Theatre, recognising 17 individuals and groups for their work in defending Canarian popular culture.
The Cultural Association Entre Amigos has organised a gala in Telde on July 31 to honour 17 individuals and groups linked to traditional Canarian culture. The event will take place at 20:00 hours in the Juan Ramón Jiménez Municipal Theatre and will bring together performers, researchers, educators, and representatives of community projects who have dedicated their lives to keeping the heritage of the Archipelago alive.
More than four decades of cultural work
The association, founded in 1984 in the Valle de Jinámar, is presided over by Suso Santana and has nearly 300 members. Its folklore group includes about 70 people among musicians and dancers. For over 40 years, the collective has focused its activities on the preservation of folklore, training young people, and promoting traditional customs, music, and dances.
The Councillor for Culture in Telde, Juan Martel, has highlighted that the gala recognises those who have dedicated part of their lives to preserving cultural roots and passing them on to new generations. According to Martel, this commitment helps to strengthen collective identity and ensures the continuity of Canarian traditions.
For the residents of Telde, this tribute represents an opportunity to celebrate the cultural legacy that is part of their daily lives. Many of the awardees are familiar faces in the municipality, where they have developed their work for decades.
Seventeen recognised careers
Among the awardees is Laura Martel, one of the few solo timple players in the Canary Islands, recognised for her career and for promoting the timple. Also receiving recognition are María del Pino Rodríguez Mendoza, a specialist in folklore, dances, and traditional clothing; Antonia Ramírez Araña, linked to dance and the preservation of Canarian attire; and María Dolores González López, a long-time member of the Entre Amigos Folklore Group.
The list includes María Jacinta Hernández Santana for her involvement in various groups and her defence of traditions; and Isaac Mendizábal Rodríguez, a historian and researcher, author of History of Jinámar, for his contribution to the study of the historical and ethnographic heritage of the neighbourhood.
Also to be honoured are Lidia Esther Sánchez González and José Pedro Suárez del Pino, promoters of the Cultural Community Development Project of La Aldea, an initiative focused on preserving and transmitting traditional popular culture of the Canary Islands. Additionally, José Juan Padilla Cabrera, an Olympic athlete who has represented Telde in international competitions, will be recognised for his connection to the cultural identity of the municipality.
The gala, which promises to be an emotional evening full of folklore, will serve for the people of Telde to acknowledge the efforts of those who keep the flame of tradition alive. Attendees will be able to enjoy live performances and a festive atmosphere that reflects the cultural richness of the Canary Islands. Admission is free until capacity is reached, as reported by the organisation.
