The spokesperson for Coalición Canaria, David Suárez, is calling on the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for a visible and permanent security presence during nights and weekends in the leisure areas of the Port and Las Canteras, following a violent assault in the early hours of Sunday.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria woke up on Sunday to a new episode of insecurity in the heart of the nightlife. A couple was violently assaulted on José Franchy Roca street, one of the busiest streets in the Santa Catalina area. Local Police officers intervened quickly, managing to locate the alleged perpetrators and recover the stolen items. One of the detainees has a record of 33 prior arrests, highlighting the recidivism in the area.
CC spokesperson focuses on the Security Councillor
The spokesperson for Coalición Canaria in the City Council, David Suárez, criticized the municipal government for its management of security. “What is Josué Íñiguez waiting for to acknowledge reality and take action?” Suárez asked, addressing the Security Councillor directly. The nationalist reminded that in the last month, there have been two extreme group assaults in the vicinity of Santa Catalina Park, a black spot that concentrates most of the incidents.
“The municipal government cannot continue to present every robbery, assault or fight as an isolated episode while incidents accumulate,” Suárez denounced. The spokesperson insisted that there are between one and two violent episodes weekly in the area, a figure that contrasts with the sense of security the governing team wants to convey.
A beating with cranial trauma and an assault with 33 arrests
Among the most serious previous incidents is the beating suffered by a young man last June in the Santa Catalina area. The victim was attacked by a group of about ten people and had to be taken to the Insular University Hospital of Gran Canaria with a cranioencephalic trauma. This incident, along with Sunday’s assault, reinforces CC's request for a visible and permanent security presence during nights and weekends.
Suárez has detailed the areas that should be included in the security presence: Santa Catalina Park, José Franchy Roca, Luis Morote, Tomás Miller, Los Martínez de Escobar and the surroundings of Las Canteras. These are spaces that attract a high influx of people due to commercial, hospitality and nightlife activities, and where residents have expressed their growing concern.
For the nationalist spokesperson, the solution lies in greater coordination between the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the National Police, as well as specific monitoring of the areas with the highest crime incidence. “We cannot allow fear to settle in the residents and tourists who choose our city to enjoy,” Suárez concluded.
Meanwhile, Local Police officers continue to patrol the area, but residents are demanding more decisive measures. The question remains: how many more assaults will it take for the City Council to act permanently?
