La Barca beach, in Sotavento (Jandía), will host the 38th edition of the Windsurfing and Wingfoil World Championship from July 16 to August 1, alongside the cultural event La Carpa, with a capacity of 4,500 people.
Fuerteventura is gearing up for a summer of wind, waves, and music. The Pájara City Council presented this Tuesday the 38th edition of the Windsurfing and Wingfoil World Championship, which will take place from July 16 to August 1 at La Barca beach, in Sotavento (Jandía). The sporting event is complemented by La Carpa, a cultural space with a capacity for 4,500 people that will feature concerts by artists such as Ñengo Flow and Omega, as well as Bresh and Noche Blanca.
An Economic Engine for Pájara
The mayor of Pájara, Alejandro Jorge, highlighted that the competition brings together elite athletes from around the world and acts as an economic engine for local commerce. “This event will benefit hotels, restaurants, and other tourist services, strengthening the municipality's economy,” he stated. The Councillor for Tourism, Maria Clementina Da Silva, emphasized the “great boost and positive impact for the sector,” as it attracts thousands of visitors for over three weeks.
For the residents of Pájara and the rest of the island, the event represents an opportunity for employment and business during the peak season. Hotels in the Jandía area are already reporting an increase in bookings for those dates, according to industry sources. Additionally, the event features a violet point coordinated for safety to ensure a secure and incident-free environment.
Sport and Leisure for All Audiences
The Councillor for Sports, José Benito Alonso, invited windsurfing and wingfoil enthusiasts, as well as the general public, to enjoy these 21 days that combine sports and leisure. “I thank all the entities and individuals who have made it possible to launch these activities,” he noted. The island's Tourism Councillor, Marlene Figueroa, added that this edition “once again places Fuerteventura at the forefront of this type of competition.”
Confirmed athletes include Dieter van der Eyken and the Chairman of the PWA, who will participate in the windsurfing and wingfoil events. The musical programme of La Carpa includes names like Ñengo Flow and Omega, in addition to events like Bresh or Noche Blanca. The venue, with a capacity for 4,500 people, has established itself as a cultural reference in the south of the island.
The economic impact is also felt in local commerce: bars, restaurants, and shops in the area are preparing extra staff and special hours to meet demand. Attendees will be able to enjoy the dreamlike beaches of Sotavento, with its crystal-clear waters and constant winds, ideal for windsurfing.
For those unable to attend in person, the championship will feature live broadcasts through the PWA's digital platforms. Tickets for La Carpa will be available on the Pájara City Council's website starting next June.
